Arkansas Symphony Youth Orchestras Concert Tonight
The Arkansas Symphony Youth Orchestras program will present a concert tonight at Pulaski Academy at 7pm.
There are four youth orchestras featuring over 150 young musicians. Each of the orchestras will be featured on the program.
The Preparatory Orchestra, under the direction of Casey Buck will perform British Grenadiers by John Caponegro, Sword Dance by Bob Phillips, and Dragonhunter by Richard Meyer.
The Prelude Orchestra is led Kiril Laskarov and Drew Irvin. Maestro Laskarov will conduct Del Borgo’s Concertino in G while Maestro Irvin will conduct Joseph Haydn’s Finale from Symphony #47.
The Academy Orchestra is under the baton of Thomas McDonald. Their selections will be Concerto Grosso in G. Major, op. 3 no. 3 by G. F. Handel; Symphony No. 104 – London by F. J. Haydn; and Chicago by John Kander and Fred Ebb. Angela Wang, violin and Philip Kim, oboe will be soloists on the first selection.
Arkansas Symphony Orchestra Associate Conductor Geoffrey Robson is the conductor of the Arkansas Symphony Youth Orchestra. Under his direction, those musicians will play Bizet’s Carmen Suite, No. 1 and Borodin’s Polovetsian Dances from Prince Igor.

Yesterday’s Architeaser was the shadows cast by a wrought iron fence along Main Street. Two sets of street lights created competing shadows from the same fence which caused a hatchwork pattern to appear.

KUAR – Radio Flyer
KUAR FM 89 will celebrate Arkansas Heritage Month with its sixth performance of Arkansas Flyer, the live variety show highlighting the best of Arkansas culture and music, at 6 p.m. Friday, May 4, at Wildwood Park for the Arts.
Hosting the festivities will be Little Rock singer-songwriter Amy Garland. The Salty Dogs, purveyors of original honky-tonk twang, will be the house band, and Velvet Kente, rock-n-roll with an Afro-beat, will be the featured act. The Flyer’s own Invisible Radio Theater returns with old-fashioned radio humor.
Arkansas Flyer returns to the 625-seat Lucy Lockett Cabe Theatre at Wildwood Park for the Arts in west Little Rock, and KUAR will host a barbecue dinner beginning at 6 p.m. The show starts at 7.
Advance online tickets for Arkansas Flyer cost $20 – $25 at the door – and include the dinner and libations. Admission for ages 12 and younger is $10. Arkansas Flyer will be broadcast on KUAR FM 89 at 7 p.m. on May 14 and 1 p.m. on May 28, Memorial Day.
Arkansas Flyer is made possible in part by a grant from the Department of Arkansas Heritage, funded by the 1/8 cent conservation tax, Amendment 75.

Arkansas Rep’s NEXT TO NORMAL

One of the best lines in the American Theatre in the 21st century is “Valium is my favorite color.”
It comes from the musical Next to Normal which opens tomorrow night and runs through May 27 at the Arkansas Repertory Theatre. In addition to winning the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama (one of the few musicals to nab that prize), it also won three 2009 Tony Awards.
With music by Tom Kitt and a book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey, Next to Normal is a powerful rock musical about a mentally ill suburban mom who struggles with worsening bipolar disorder and the effects that illness has on her family. The Arkansas Rep production is directed by Nicole Capri. The cast features Deb Lyons as Diana — the mother of the family, Jonathan Rayson as her husband Dan, Kristin Parker and Will Holly as their children, Mo Brady as a friend of the family and Peter James Zielinski playing a pair of physicians. Zielinski was last seen at the Rep in The Full Monty.
Helen Gregory is the Musical Director. Other members of the creative team include Mike Nichols (scenic designer), Shelly Hall (costume designer), Michael J. Eddy (lighting designer), M. Jason Pruzin (sound designer) and Lynda J. Kwallek (properties designer).
