IMG_4670This is the side view of the second floor balcony of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette building at Capitol and Scott Streets.  It is interesting to note that this is one of the few non-governmental buildings to fly a US flag.

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette building was built in 1904 to house the first YMCA program in Arkansas.  The YMCA–Democrat Building was built in 1904. The building was designed by Little Rock architect, Charles L. Thompson, in a Renaissance Revival style. Following the relocation of the YMCA to Broadway in 1928, the building was acquired in 1930 by K. August Engel to house the Arkansas Democrat.  In 1991, the name of the building was changed to reflect the new name of the newspaper.

Yesterday’s Architeaser was the awning on the front entrance to the Museum Center building.  One of the key structures in the development of the River Market District, this building formerly housed a train station and presses for the Arkansas Democrat.  It is a unique awning in that it has a rounded shape instead of a being flat.  As many awnings are, it is affixed to the building with cables.

Yesterday’s Architeaser was four animals which are over the door of the main entrance to the Museum Center building. Two of them were winged griffin-like animals with scaled tails while the other two are large cats such as jaguars. Built as a railroad terminal in 1927, it later served as the press building for the Arkansas Democrat. In 1998, a $12 million adaptive reuse was completed. The building is now home to restaurants, offices and the namesake Museum of Discovery.
