Wednesday Night Movie is FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS at Movies in the Park

MitP10 FriNightLightThe weather in July has had some nights that have seemed apt for football.  And let’s face it, players from middle school up to the pros will be reporting soon for practice. To get everyone in the mood, Movies in the Park is screening the 2004 film FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS.

Central Arkansas native Billy Bob Thornton heads the cast which also features Connie Britton, Lucas Black, Jay Hernandez, Garrett Hedlund, Derek Luke, Lee Jackson, Lee Thompson Young, Grover Coulson, Connie Cooper, Kasey Stevens, Ryanne Duzich and Amber Heard. Award winning singer Tim McGraw also stars in the film.

The movie was directed by Peter Berg from a screen play he and David Aaron Cohen wrote.  It is based upon Buzz Bissinger’s non-fiction book Friday Night Lights: A Town, a Team, and a Dream.  The movie was adapted into a TV series which ran from 2006 to 2011.  Britton starred in that series too, but it was more fictionalized and her her character had a different name.

Now in its 10th season, Movies in the Park is a free outdoor film series at the First Security Amphitheater in Riverfront Park.  The move starts at dark (around 8:30).

Movies in the Park has grown to a season of eight films per year, on average, reaching audiences of up to 7,000 people. It’s a staple event in Central Arkansas. Communities from across the state, and the country, have reached out for guidance as they have tried to implement similar programs in the own communities.

Since 2008, the Little Rock Convention & Visitors Bureau has been managing Movies in the Park.

Fun and Games – HUNGER GAMES at Movies in the Park tonight

MitP10 HungerGamesThe 2012 movie The Hunger Games is next up at Movies in the Park.

Oscar winner (though not for this role) Jennifer Lawrence leads the cast.  Other major roles are played by Stanley Tucci, Willow Shields, Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks, Josh Hutcherson, Donald Sutherland, Woody Harrelson, Toby Jones and Lenny Kravitz.  Central Arkansas native Wes Bentley also stars in the movie.

The film is directed by Gary Ross, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Suzanne Collins and Billy Ray. It is based on the novel by Ms. Collins.

HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER’S STONE tonight at Movies in the Park

MitP10 HarryPotterA magical summer evening is certainly in store with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. 

Chris Columbus directed this 2001 movie, which kicked off what proved to be a successful film franchise, replicating the success of the books.

Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson play the central trio of youngsters. Richard Harris, Maggie Smith, Alan Rickman, Robbie Coltrane, Fiona Shaw, Richard Griffiths, John Hurt and Julie Walters are some of the esteemed British actors who play adult roles in the movie.

Fight the Summer Heat – Enjoy FROZEN at Movies in the Park tonight

MitP10 FrozenThe 2013 film Frozen is tonight’s film at Movies in the Park.

Directed by Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee, it is inspired by the Hans Christian Andersen story “The Snow Queen.”  This Oscar winning movie stars Kirsten Bell, Idina Menzel, Jonathan Groff, Josh Gad, Santino Fontana, Alan Tudyk, Ciaran Hinds and Edie McClurg.  Frozen was named Best Animated Feature at the Oscars. It also won the Best Song Oscar for “Let It Go” by Bobby Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez.

“Intermission” at Robinson Center comes on July 1

Robinson IntermissionAfter several years of planning and an overwhelming vote of support by the Little Rock electorate, the renovations of Robinson Center Music Hall start after a press conference and ceremony on Tuesday, July 1 at 10am.

The building will be closed for two years as the music hall space is re-envisioned with a new, dynamic design implemented which will create not only an outstanding experience for the audience but also for the performers.

In addition, a new special event space will be built along the north side of the building taking advantage of Arkansas River and Riverfront Park views.

Though the Music Hall interior will be re-purposed and re-designed including a two level lobby space, the historic Markham Street lobby a the top of the stairs will be preserved.  In a nod to the appearance when it opened in February 1940, the lobby will be refurnished to its Art Deco splendor.  While the original chandeliers and accents have been lost to time, they are being recreated and will be installed. In addition, the front doors and windows will be re-designed to mimic the original entrances to the historic lobby.

Following the two year intermission, the building is scheduled to re-open in 2016.

(If two years, seems a long time for an intermission, when one considers that the first act was 74 years, it is actually a proportionally shorter interval than one normally gets at performances.)

Mike Judge’s workplace masterpiece is 15 years old this year.  As the employees of Initech and Chotchkie’s, it stars Ron Livingston, Jennifer Aniston, Stephen Root, Gary Cole, David Herman, Ajay Naidu, Diedrich Bader, John C. McGinley, Paul Wilson, Alexandra Wentworth and Greg Pitts.

MAN OF STEEL kicks off Movies in the Park 10th Season

MitP 10MitP10 ManofSteelMovies in the Park kicks off its 10th season tonight with MAN OF STEEL.  This 2013 movie, a re-boot of the Superman franchise, stars Henry Cavill as the titular hero.  Others in the cast are Amy Adams, Michael Shannon (who has filmed movies in Little Rock), Diane Lane, Russell Crowe, Richard Schiff, Christopher Meloni, Kevin Costner and Laurence Fishburne.

Just before the movie, founders Blake Rutherford, Heather Allmendinger and Ben Beaumont will be honored.  The celebration will be on Wednesday, June 11 at 8:30 p.m. at the First Security Amphitheater, just prior to the kickoff of the 2014 season.
