May 23 Architeaser: First Security Amphitheatre

DSCF5168Today’s Architeaser is the new First Security Amphitheatre in Riverfront Park.  It is built on the same pad as the original amphiteatre which opened in 1988, so this marks the 25th anniversary of an amphitheatre in Riverfront Park.

The amphitheatre was designed by Mike Steelman of SCM Architects, with construction overseen by Flynn Remodeling and Construction.  The curved roof mimics the curved trusses of the Junction Bridge (visible in the background) and the Clinton Presidential Bridge which flank either side of amphitheatre.

The sloped roofing and wooden ceiling are designed to send the music out to the audience better (and to keep performers drier) than the previous stage covering did.  Though not visible in the photos, the roof is sheathed in teal metal to match the First Security Bank color scheme.  The seats in the amphitheatre will be replaced later this summer and and have the same color.

In recognition of the financial commitment made by Riverfest and the festival’s status as a cultural touchstone for the amphitheatre, the stage is known as Riverfest Stage.

The First Security Amphitheatre will be a focal point of this weekend’s Riverfest.

Friday Faces of February: Native Knowledge

In the month of February the LR Culture Vulture will highlight four different faces found in sculpture and architecture in Central Arkansas.

Native American Face

To start things off is one of the faces from the new sculpture Native Knowledge which is located in Riverfront Park.  The installation was created by Denny Haskew.  Native Knowledge is a tribute to the Caddo, Osage, and Quapaw Native American Cultures of Arkansas.

It is sited near the Quapaw Line and La Petite Roche.  The location is important because the Quapaw Line was used as demarcation to separate the Quapaw Tribe from land available for white settlers.  It ran from La Petite Roche due south.  In addition, La Petite Roche was a stop along the “Trail of Tears” as Native American tribes were resettled from their original homes in the American Southeast to points west.

LR Look Back: Mayor Martin Borchert

Martin John BorchertOn this date in 1916, future Little Rock Mayor Martin Borchert was born in Stuttgart.  After graduating high school he moved to Little Rock.  He started work at ACME Brick and spent 21 years there before engaging in other business interests.  Among these businesses were Martin Borchert Co., ASCO Hardware, Dtection Systems Inc. and Component Systems Inc.  In 2005 he was inducted into the Arkansas Construction Hall of Fame.

In 1967 he served on the President’s National Advisory Council to the Small Business Administration. Mayor Borchert served on the Little Rock Water Commission, including a tenure as chairman.
