Architeaser May 30

Yesterday’s Architeaser was one of the four genies on the facade of the Centre Place building located at 212 Center Street.  The building was designed by George R. Mann and was constructed between 1911 and 1917.  In 1981 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.  Mann’s design was heavily influenced by buildings being constructed in Chicago at the time and also includes Beaux Arts elements (of which the genies are).

2012 Little Rock Film Fest Day 2

Russell

 

The Little Rock Film Fest continues on day two with programming at two Little Rock cultural institutions.

At 4pm Little Rock Zoo hosts a zoo keeper chat about elephants. This will be followed at 4:30pm by the documentary The Eyes of Thailand.

At the Riverdale cinemas the first two films will be shown this evening: at 7pm, Richard Linlater’s Bernie will be shown while Daryl Wein’s Lola Versus will start at 7:30.

The Arkansas Arts Center plays host to a reception honoring filmmaker Jay Russell, an Arkansas native. Following the 7:30 reception, Philip Martin will moderate a discussion with Russell at 8pmThe program will also feature clips from some of Russell’s movies. Beginning at 9:15, the Arkansas Arts Center will host a Garden and Gallery party for filmmakers, Gold and Silver pass holders.

Architeaser May 29

Yesterday’s Architeaser featured two people holding a crest over the south entrance of the old YMCA building at Broadway and Sixth Streets. The building was built in 1928 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

2012 Little Rock Film Fest Day 1

20120528-164836.jpgThe 2013 Little Rock Film Festival kicks off tonight with the screening of the documentary, America’s Parking Lot.

Here is the LRFF description:

Pull up a front row seat with Tiger and Cy, two die-hard fans of ‘America’s Team’, as they scramble to preserve their place in AMERICA’S PARKING LOT. When the Dallas Cowboys move to the first stadium built for a billion dollars, the shifting politics and economics of major league sports threaten to dissolve friendships and traditions, and force Tiger and Cy to make the costly choice to follow their beloved team

The film will be shown at 7pm at the Argenta Community Theatre. At 6pm, Gold Pass holders can attend a special reception on site. Following the film at 9pm, a tailgate party will take place outside. Montgomery Trucking will provide musical entertainment while guests eat food provided by Whole Hog and Ben E. Keith.

Architeaser May 28

Yesterday’s Architeaser featured the front doors of the Cathedral of St Andrew. It depicts each of the twelve apostles post resurrection. The building was designed by Thomas Harding and opened in 1881.

Memorial Day — Remembering Arkansas’ Fallen Military Heroes

Though it is not open today, Memorial Day is a good time to be reminded of one of Little Rock’s museum treasures.  Located in the historic Arsenal Tower in MacArthur Park, the MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History honors the Arkansans who have served in the armed forces.  Exhibits feature artifacts, photographs, weapons, documents, uniforms and other military items that vividly portray Arkansas’s military history at home and abroad.

The exhibits include “Through the Camera’s Eye: The Allison Collection of World War II Photographs,” “Alger Cade Gun,” “By the President in the Name of Congress: Arkansas’ Medal of Honor Recipients,” “Camden Expedition,” “Conflict and Crisis: The MacArthur-Truman Controversy,” “David Owen Dodd,” “In Search of Pancho Villa: the Mexican Punitive Expedition of 1916,” “The Forgotten War: Arkansas and the Korean War,” “From Turbulence to Tranquility: The Little Rock Arsenal,” “The Sun Never Sets on the Mighty Jeep: The Jeep During World War II,” “War and Remembrance: The 1911 United Confederate Veterans Reunion, “The War to End All Wars: Arkansas Fights World War I.”

The MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History is a museum of the City of Little Rock.  It is led by executive director Stephan McAteer who works with the MacArthur Military History Museum Commission.  The museum is open Tuesday through Friday from 9am to 4pm, Saturday from 10am to 4pm and Sunday from 1pm to 4pm.

Architeaser – May 27

Yesterday’s Architeaser was a flower in a frieze on a building at the southwest corner of Louisiana and Fourth Streets. The building’s front door is actually on the corner. The featured flowers are above a secondary door which fronts Fourth Street. It faces the Tower Building parking lot.
