Running on a Tin Roof

talesfromsouthThe first week of each month, Tales from the South features one person sharing their life story. They call it Tin Roof Project.  April features elite runner Leah Thorvilson.

In 2012, Thorvilson qualified to run in the US Olympic Team Marathon Trials where she finished with a time of 2:42:09.

On March 4, 2012, Thorvilson won the Little Rock Marathon for the fourth year in a row with a personal best time of 2:37:26. On April 28, 2012 Thorvilson won the Frisco Railroad Run 50 Mile Race in Willard, Missouri with a time of 6:00:31. This is the fourth fastest 50 miler by a female ever.

Tales From the South” is a radio show created and produced by Paula Martin Morell, who is also the show’s host. The show is taped live on Tuesday. The night is a cross between a house concert and a reading/show, with incredible food and great company. Tickets must be purchased before the show, as shows are usually standing-room only.

“Tales from the South” is a showcase of writers reading their own true stories. While the show itself is unrehearsed, the literary memoirs have been worked on for weeks leading up to the readings. Stories range from funny to touching, from everyday occurrences to life-altering tragedies.

The program takes place at Starving Artist Café.  Dinner is served from 5pm to 6:30pm, the show starts at 7pm.  Admission is $5, not including dinner.

Tuesday, March 5 , the Starving Artist Cafe will come alive with Tales from the South’s monthly “Tin Roof Project” which features a Southerner in conversation. This month the featured guest is artist Kevin Kresse.

Artist Kevin Kresse, a native Arkansan, supports his family as a painter and sculptor in Little Rock. He has exhibited his work around Arkansas and in New York, NY, Washington D.C., Memphis, TN, and Atlanta, GA.

Kresse has been awarded painting fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts-Mid America Arts Alliance and the Arkansas Arts Council. He has also won several awards in the Arkansas Arts Center annual Delta competition.

He has been featured in the Arkansas Times, Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, the North Little Rock Times, the Little Rock Free Press, Active Years Magazine, and Soiree Magazine.

Kresse has also been featured in pieces produced by the local affiliates of ABC, CBS, and PBS television, as well as a film short by Garret Lakin. Kevin lives in Little Rock with his wife Bridget and their three children.

Brad Williams and blues guitarist Mark Simpson will provide musical entertainment.

Lard and the Bard, or Shakespeare in the South Part II

schedule~~element27Following the success of last year’s special Shakespeare in the South at Tales from the South, the second edition returns tomorrow night, February 12. (It is Lincoln’s birthday – and he was a fan of Shakespeare, so you can celebrate the 16th President’s birthday by attending.)

Authors Jay Jennings, Hope Coulter and Greg Brownderville will regale the audience with stories centered around finding themselves, others, and even the South in the Bard. The live taping of the radio series will be at Starving Artist Café in the Argenta Arts District. Live music by Shelley King and blues guitarist Mark Simpson.

Doors open at 5pm, dinner is served 5pm-6:30pm and the show starts at 7pm. Tickets are $5 for the show, plus the cost of dinner. Seating is very limited. Tickets can be purchased online at www.talesfromthesouth.com.

“Tales from the South” is recorded on Tuesdays during “Dinner and a Show” at Starving Artist Café. The show airs locally on KUAR Thursdays at 7pm and is syndicated by World Radio Network, a satellite radio distribution service, available to more than 130 million listeners worldwide.

Shows are also distributed nationwide to multiple public radio stations by PRX (Public Radio Exchange). Podcasts are available on ITunes, the NPR website, the KUAR website, the PRX website, and the “Tales from the South” website.

Talman has costarred with Elizabeth Taylor, Jerry Stiller, Ben Stiller, Maureen Stapleton, Nathan Lane, Kate Burton, Elisabeth Shue, Frances Conroy, John Mahoney, Stockard Channing, Swoosie Kurtz, Henderson Forsythe, Rue McClanahan, Cynthia Nixon, Jennifer Tilley, Jennifer Coolidge, Kristen Johnston and Amy Ryan — just to name a few.

Tales from the South — Lost in the Woods

Literature is filled with stories of people being lost in the woods.  For instance, most of the Brothers Grimm folk tales involve journeys through the woods.  “Tales from the South”  adds the chapter to this with tonight’s program “Lost in the Woods” featuring Trey Moore, Mary Shelton and Russell Gayer.  Music is by Brad Williams & Isaac Alexander and blues guitarist Mark Simpson
