Philip Martin headlines tonight’s Tales from the South

talesfromsouthTales from the South returns with the June “Tin Roof Project” featuring Philip Martin.  The program takes place tonight.  Advance reservations are required and seating is limited.

Music is by the Salty Dogs and blues guitarist Mark Simpson.

Philip Martin is a columnist, editor and the chief film critic at the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. He has won more than 40 regional and national journalism awards during his tenure at the newspaper, including two Green Eyeshade Awards, and he was a finalist for the 2012 James Hearst Poetry Prize.

He is also the “monkey in the nose cone” at blooddirtandangels.com, a culture blog from “the perspective of a self-identified Southerner who still reads novels and likes baseball, dogs and punk rock music.” His first album of original songs, Gastonia, was released in March 2013, and is now available on iTunes and through most other digital outlets.

Born in Savannah, Ga., Martin has played pro baseball in South America and rhythm guitar in garage bands. He lives in the Hillcrest neighborhood of Little Rock with his wife Karen and three rescue terriers.

The night is a cross between a house concert and a reading/show, with incredible food and great company. Tickets must be purchased before the show, as shows are usually standing-room only.

“Tales from the South” is a showcase of writers reading their own true stories.  While the show itself is unrehearsed, the literary memoirs have been worked on for weeks leading up to the readings. Stories range from funny to touching, from everyday occurrences to life-altering tragedies.

Tales from the South pays tribute to Randy Tardy

Randy Tardy is the retired transportation and business writer for the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette in Little Rock. He covered railroads, airlines and river traffic from 1976 until 2001. Randy, who is now in hospice, would like to share his stories with the world, so they will be read by his close friends.Randy’s stories will be read by Walter Walker, Rex Nelson, and Harvey Joe Sanner. Live music will be provided by The Salty Dogs and blues guitarist Mark Simpson.

Two Tales from the South this week

On Tuesday, April 30, the program will focus on “Lost and Found” featuring stories by Mary Lester, Wetzel LaGrone and May Griebel.  Music that night will be provided by Justin McGoldrick and blues guitarist Mark Simpson.

On Wednesday, May 1, Heritage Month will kick off with a Historic Preservation of Arkansas show.  It will feature stories by Deborah Carroll, James King and Sandra Hamilton. Mark Currey and blues guitarist Mark Simpson will provide the music.

Running on a Tin Roof

talesfromsouthThe first week of each month, Tales from the South features one person sharing their life story. They call it Tin Roof Project.  April features elite runner Leah Thorvilson.

In 2012, Thorvilson qualified to run in the US Olympic Team Marathon Trials where she finished with a time of 2:42:09.

On March 4, 2012, Thorvilson won the Little Rock Marathon for the fourth year in a row with a personal best time of 2:37:26. On April 28, 2012 Thorvilson won the Frisco Railroad Run 50 Mile Race in Willard, Missouri with a time of 6:00:31. This is the fourth fastest 50 miler by a female ever.

Tuesday, March 5 , the Starving Artist Cafe will come alive with Tales from the South’s monthly “Tin Roof Project” which features a Southerner in conversation. This month the featured guest is artist Kevin Kresse.

Artist Kevin Kresse, a native Arkansan, supports his family as a painter and sculptor in Little Rock. He has exhibited his work around Arkansas and in New York, NY, Washington D.C., Memphis, TN, and Atlanta, GA.

Kresse has been awarded painting fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts-Mid America Arts Alliance and the Arkansas Arts Council. He has also won several awards in the Arkansas Arts Center annual Delta competition.

He has been featured in the Arkansas Times, Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, the North Little Rock Times, the Little Rock Free Press, Active Years Magazine, and Soiree Magazine.

Kresse has also been featured in pieces produced by the local affiliates of ABC, CBS, and PBS television, as well as a film short by Garret Lakin. Kevin lives in Little Rock with his wife Bridget and their three children.

Brad Williams and blues guitarist Mark Simpson will provide musical entertainment.

Tales from the South tomorrow night: Tin Roof Project featuring Ann Talman

The first week of each month, Tales from the South features one person sharing their life story. They call it Tin Roof Project.  November features actress Ann Talman.  Born in West Virginia, she has had a film and stage career since the 1980s.

Talman has costarred with Elizabeth Taylor, Jerry Stiller, Ben Stiller, Maureen Stapleton, Nathan Lane, Kate Burton, Elisabeth Shue, Frances Conroy, John Mahoney, Stockard Channing, Swoosie Kurtz, Henderson Forsythe, Rue McClanahan, Cynthia Nixon, Jennifer Tilley, Jennifer Coolidge, Kristen Johnston and Amy Ryan — just to name a few.

Literature is filled with stories of people being lost in the woods.  For instance, most of the Brothers Grimm folk tales involve journeys through the woods.  “Tales from the South”  adds the chapter to this with tonight’s program “Lost in the Woods” featuring Trey Moore, Mary Shelton and Russell Gayer.  Music is by Brad Williams & Isaac Alexander and blues guitarist Mark Simpson
