Sculpture Vulture: Michael Warrick’s GROWN

Since June is a month in which people spend a lot of time in gardens, the Sculpture Vulture will focus on sculptures found in a garden. In this instance it is the Vogel Schwartz Sculpture Garden, located in Riverfront Park. Over 30 sculptures are located in this garden, which opened in 2009.

Today’s is Michael Warrick’s Grown which was installed in 2010. Using bronze, Warrick creates a framework to evoke the lower-half of a human. What initially looks merely like an abstract series of strips is, in fact, sculpted to resemble twigs and branches. The sculpture is approximately four feet tall, making it roughly 25% larger than life.

Warrick is a longtime faculty member at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and has sculptures placed as far away as China in addition to appearing in many public and private collections in Arkansas and throughout the United States.

Architeaser June 2

June’s first Architeaser was one of the dozens of persons sculpted into the wall of the Justice Building on the State Capitol grounds.  The wall surrounds the court chambers in an addition which was completed in 1976 and designed by Noland Blass Jr.

Little Rock Film Fest – Day 5

Films and fun punctuate the fifth day of the LRFF.

The day will kick off for filmmakers with a brunch at The House and conclude with the Oxford American’s Best of the South Soiree at the Oxford American headquarters on South Main.

Films screened today with filmmakers in attendance include Clean Lines, Open Spaces; The Mayor; Supporting Characters; Pilgrim Song; Europa; High Tech, Low Life; Leave Me Like You Found Me; On Down the Line; The Dynamiter; Future Weather; Wolf; The Trouble with Truth; I Am Not a Hipster; Think of Me; Tchoupitoulas; Bay of All Saints; Gimme the Loot and The Gleaning.

Other films screened today are Journey to Planet X; Planet X: Part II – The Frozen Moon; Booster; Once in a Lullaby: The PS22 Chorus Story and I’m from Arkansas.

The Arkansas Shorts which will be screened are (in the Tricks and Treasures grouping) “The Man in the Moon,” “The Birthday Present,” “Chutes and Gates,” “The Bloodstone Diaries, Thief of All Things,” and “Good Guys vs. Bad Guys”;  (in the Warm-Blooded Cold-Hearted grouping) “Shattered,” “Cain and Abel,” “Greed,” “Children of the Mother Beaver,” “Fowl,” “Cold Tracker,” and “Ruthless.” Filmmakers will be present at the screenings.

The World Shorts which will be screened are (in the In the End Let’s Feel Good grouping) “Busted Walk,” “Die Beobachtung,” “Happy Voodoo,” “Chin Up,” “The Assignment”; (in the True to Life grouping) “Mr. Christmas,” “Idle Hour,” “This Is Our House,” and “Beneath the White City Lights”; and (in the Let’s Talk About It grouping) “Crossing,” “Lost Night,” “Contra el Mar,” and “The Sea Is All I Know.” Filmmakers will be present at the screenings.

The day will also feature a conversation with photographer Brent Stirton and a discussion on crowdsourcing independent film.

Architeaser June 1

Yesterday’s Architeaser was one of the terra cotta faces emerging from the facade of the original part of the Pulaski County Courthouse.  Designed by Maximilian A. Orlopp in Romanesque Revival style, the building features ornate imagery in the red painted portions of the building which frame the stone work and roof line. The building was built from 1887 to 1889.

Today’s Architeaser is not a George Mann nor a Pulaski County Courthouse face.

Little Rock Film Fest Day 4

June busts out all over as the Little Rock Film Fest programming runs for over 12 hours on Day 4.

The films screened today with filmmakers present will be The Trouble with Truth; Conlon Nancarrow: Virtuoso of the Player Piano; Running the Distance; Go the Distance: Helping End Homelessness; A Sister’s Call; Gimme the Loot; I Am Not a Hipster; Daisy Bates: First Lady of Little Rock; Clean Lines, Open Spaces; First Winter; The List; Supporting Characters; and On Down the Line.

Also screening today are In My Mother’s Arms; Bookers Place: A Mississippi Story; Teddy Bear; The Eyes of Thailand; The World Before Her; Once in a Lullaby; The PS22 Chorus Story; Bay of All Saints; Eating Alabama; Beasts of the Southern Wild; Andrew Bird: Fever Year; and Town of Runners.

The World Shorts which will be screened are (in the Other Worldly grouping) “Golden Ears,” “Man in Fear,” “HWY,” “Animeditation,” “Bunker 731,” “The God Phone”; (in the True to Life grouping) “Mr. Christmas,” “Idle Hour,” “This Is Our House,” and “Beneath the White City Lights.” Filmmakers will be present.

The Ark Shorts screened on day 4 are (in the Road Most Traveled grouping) “Tree,” “John Wayne’s Bed,” “The Proposal,” and “Still Life.”  Filmmakers will be present for these as well.

Among the special events are a “Stories for the Web Screen,” a Conversation with Jay Russell; and the Sync or Swim Riverboat Party.  There is also an Argenta Arts District Rooftop Party available only to filmmakers, sponsors and Gold pass holders.

Architeaser May 31

May’s penultimate Architeaser was one of the helmeted heads which overlook doors to the Pulaski County Courthouse.   Like the May 29 Genies and Union Life Building, the Courthouse and helmeted heads were the brainchild of George R. Mann.  The courthouse was an expansion of the original 1880s courthouse which this adjoins.  Mann did not try to duplicate the architecture of the original structure but instead built an impressive neo-classical “governmental” building which has a more timeless look than the original structure.

2012 Little Rock Film Fest Day 3

Day three of the Little Rock film fest starts at 2:10pm with The World Before Her screening at Riverdale and concludes with the Afterparty at the Peabody Hotel which starts at 10:30pm.

In between the following films will be screened, most at Riverdale: Teddy Bear; Booker’s Place: A Mississippi Story; Andrew Bird: Fever Year; In My Mother’s Arms; High Tech, Low Life; Booster; and Beast of the Southern Wild.

Also being shown, and with filmmakers in attendance will be: America’s Parking Lot; Daisy Bates: First Lady of Little Rock; Pilgrim Song; My Dog Skip; Future Weather; The Mayor; Journey to Planet X; Planet X: Part II – The Frozen Moon; and It’s in the Blood.

The Little Rock Film Fest features short films as well as features.  Many of these filmmakers will be in attendance at the screenings.
