Ballet Arkansas Master Class by Christopher Ruud

FBLOGO 2Ballet West Principal Artist Christopher Ruud will teach an open master class for intermediate and advanced dancers this evening, September 12th. The class begins at 7:00pm and will conclude at 9:00pm. This is the second class in Ballet Arkansas’ Master Class series. Son of respected dancer and choreographer Tomm Ruud, Christopher is proud to be responsible for his father’s works. Christopher has set and performed his fathers ballet’s, such as Mobile, for companies including Stuttgart Ballet, Ballet West, Joffrey Ballet Co. and now Ballet Arkansas.

During his time in Arkansas, Mr. Ruud will be setting Mobile on the company to be performed in Ballet Arkansas’ spring concert, Spring into Motion, at the Arkansas Repertory Theatre in April 2013.

The master class will be offered at the Ballet Arkansas Studio at Shuffles and Ballet II.  There is a $25 class fee or a $15 observer fee. Space is limited, please email us at info@balletarkansas.org to reserve your spot.

A native of San Francisco, Christopher began his training at the San Francisco Ballet School. There he studied for seven years before training at the University of Utah Ballet Department. Christopher joined Ballet West in 1998, was promoted to Soloist in 2001 and Principal in 2004. Since joining the company Christopher has toured throughout the United States and abroad including multi-city tours in China and in Scotland at the Edinburgh International Festival.

Some of his notable roles include Petruchio in John Cranko’s The Taming of the Shrew, the Second Pas de Deux in Antony Tudor’s The Leaves Are Fading, Prince Seigfried in Swan Lake, Christopher Bruce’s Ghost Dances, William Forsythe’s In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated and Romeo in Romeo and Juliet .  Christopher has performed the principal roles in multiple versions of such classics as Swan LakeThe Sleeping BeautyGiselle, Cinderella , Don Quixote and Le Corsaire Pas de Deux.  He has also danced leading roles in works by Jerome Robbins, Twyla Tharp, Jiri Kylian, Antony Tudor, Val Caniparoli, Hans van Manen and Nicolo Fonte.

Christopher’s favorite Balanchine credits include Liza in Who Cares?, Puck in A Midsummer Night’s Dream,  Serenade, Melancholic and Sanguinic in The Four TemperamentsTchaikovsky Pas de Deux, El Capitan in Stars and Stripesand the principal in Theme and Variations. Recently he has had works created on him by Nicolo Fonte in The Immeasurable Cadences WithinHelen Picket in But Never Doubt I Love and Charlotte Boye-Christensen in Row.

Internationally known dancer/teacher/choreographer Tong Wang will teach an open master class for intermediate and advanced dancers this Thursday. The class begins at 6 pm and will conclude at 8 pm. This will be the first class in a series of Master Classes to be taught by Ballet Arkansas’ guest choreographers and guest dancers throughout the 2012-2013 Season. Mr. Wang is choreographing a new work for Ballet Arkansas’ fall concert, American Images</em, which premieres at Wildwood Park for the Arts October 12-14.

Tong Wang is assistant professor at the University of California at Irvine Department of Dance. For the last twenty years, he has enjoyed a successful international dance career as a principal dancer. After graduating from Beijing Dance Academy in 1986, he danced with Shanghai Ballet, Tulsa Ballet Theatre, Dayton Ballet, Colorado Ballet, and most recently, Ballet West in Salt Lake City. He has performed almost every leading male role in the classical ballet repertoire and also danced a full range of ballets created by world-renowned choreographers such as George Balanchine, Antony Tudor, Frederick Ashton, John Cranko, Paul Taylor, Glen Tetley, Birgit Culberg, Choo-san Goh, William Forsythe, Ben Stevenson, and Hans Van Manen. While dancing professionally, he completed his B.F.A and M.F.A degrees with the University of Utah Ballet Department and also worked as a guest faculty member.

In addition, he has enjoyed a choreographic relationship with Ballet West, the University of Utah Ballet Department, Wright State University, Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, DanceOhio, and Ballet West Conservatory. Mr. Wang has served as Assistant Professor of Dance at Wright State University and at Butler University in Indianapolis.

Art of Motion: Tango at Arkansas Arts Center

The Arkansas Arts Center will host Art of Motion: Tango on Thursday, 0 from 7 to 10:30pm.

Art of Motion: Tango is a special arts event where guests can enjoy an evening of dance.  The AAC stresses that this event is perfect for people with no dance experience, dance experts or individuals who just want to watch.  No partner is needed.

Dance lessons begin at 7pm with instruction from both local and national tango teachers.  After the lesson, guests will be able to practice their new moves and dance the night away.

Admission is $10; free for Arkansas Arts Center members.

Art of Motion: Tango will continue on the second Thursday of each month through May 2013.  Future dates are September 13, October 11, November 8, December 13, January 10,  February 14, March 14, April 11 and May 9.

Architeaser – May 27

Yesterday’s Architeaser was a flower in a frieze on a building at the southwest corner of Louisiana and Fourth Streets. The building’s front door is actually on the corner. The featured flowers are above a secondary door which fronts Fourth Street. It faces the Tower Building parking lot.

Ballet Arkansas honors Kolb, announces 2012-13 season

Earlier this month, Ballet Arkansas hosted its annual spring soiree.  At the evening, Joseph F. Kolb was presented with the “Above the Barre” award.  Kolb was recognized for his past leadership on the Ballet Arkansas board.  In the early 2000s, Kolb served as the producer of the annual Ballet Arkansas production of The Nutcracker when there was no staff available to do so.

Kolb has also been an active board member of the Arkansas Repertory Theatre and Historic Arkansas Museum. He and his wife Cindy have two daughters. The oldest one is taking dance classes, so he now his most important connection is a ballet dad instead of being a ballet board member.

Also at the soiree, Ballet Arkansas announced its 2012-2013 season and featured dancers presenting preview moments.   The season will kick off with American Images on October 12 – 14, 2012. The dancers will interpret iconic pieces of art in dance. The performances will take place at Wildwood Park for the Arts in conjunction with Wildwood’s Harvest Fest.

Next up will be the annual production of The Nutcracker from December 7 – 9, 2012 at Robinson Center Music Hall.  This holiday tradition will featured not only Company members and Ballet Arkansas II but also dozens upon dozens of local dance students.

Ballet Arkansas spring into Spring at the Arkansas Repertory Theatre. From April 5 – 7, 2013, it will present Spring into Motion which will feature a variety of dances.

Throughout the season, the Company tour beyondCATEGORY throughout the state. In conjunction with this tour, the Company will also offer workshops.

Lauren Quick Strother is the Executive Director of Ballet Arkansas.  The guest artist and artistic advisor is Michael Bearden, courtesy of BalletWest.  Guy Couch is the Tour Director. The 2012-2013 Company includes: Leslie Dodge, Lauren McCarty Horak, Toby Lewellen, Anna Maris, Sean Porter, Laurel Dix, Paul Tillman, Katchiri Feys Tillman and Amanda Sewell.

Arkansas Festival Ballet’s ALADDIN

Arkansas Festival Ballet presents a full-length story ballet Aladdin this weekend.  Performances began last night and continue today at 2pm and 7:30pm as well as Sunday at 2pm.  This will conclude the twelfth season for Arkansas Festival Ballet.

The production boasts a relatively new score by Carl Davis.  It was commissioned in 2000 for the Scottish Ballet.  Among the nearly 100 dancers are four lead dancers: Allison Stearns and Meredith Short, and Calvin Chester and Nathan Young.

The performances will be at the Arkansas Arts Center Children’s Theatre in MacArthur Park.
