1398117_10152031415501119_948002399_oIt is perhaps not too early to start standing in line for the final performance of the River City Men’s Chorus 2013 Holiday Concert.  The first performances (Sunday) was overflowing.  The final performances are tonight (Monday, December 2) and Thursday, December 5th at 7pm.

Under the leadership of conductor and artistic director David Glaze, the River City Men’s Chorus concert ranges from the sublime to the silly. There are times it is hard to tell who is having more fun or is more moved – the audience or the singers.

The River City Men’s Chorus ushers in the holiday season with its annual concert that combines traditional Christmas songs such as “O Holy Night” and “Hark, The Herald Angels Sing” with favorites like “Let It Snow” and “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” along with some other wonderful surprises.

The concert takes place at Trinity Methodist Church at 1101 N. Mississippi St.  The concert starts at 7pm. Doors to auditorium typically open an hour early for the free, open seating.  If weather is inclement, doors to the church (but not auditorium) will be opened even earlier so that audience members can stay warm and dry.

Steven Lin at Chamber Music Society of LR tonight

steven linSteven Lin will be the featured artist tonight at the Chamber Music Society of Little Rock concert.  The event will take place at 7:30 tonight at Trinity United Methodist Church.  Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at the Chamber Music Society website.

A victory at the 2012 CAG Victor Elmaleh Competition is the latest in a growing list of awards for Steven Lin, an immediately engaging and imaginative young Taiwanese American pianist.  The Baltimore Sun declared his recent performance “elegantly refined,” listening to Lin as soloist in Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini with the Baltimore Symphony.  His vibrant playing at the 2013 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition was recognized both by the critics (“…thoroughly enjoyable both as music and as a performance”–Ft. Worth Star-Telegram) and the judges, who selected him for the John Giordano Jury Chairman Discretionary Award.

Highlights of his 2013-14 season include debut recitals at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall (CAG New York Series) and Merkin Concert Hall, the Gilmore Rising Stars series (Kalamazoo, MI), Pepperdine University Center for the Arts (Malibu, CA), Chamber Music Society of Little Rock (AR), and the Ferst Center for the Arts at Georgia Tech University.  Featured concerto engagements include the Tulare County Symphony (CA), where he plays Michael Daugherty’s Le Tombeau de Liberace.  The season began with summer festival performances at the Aspen Chamber Music Workshop, under the mentorship of David Finckel and Wu Han, and the La Jolla Summerfest, curated by violinist Cho-Liang Lin.

Steven Lin’s artistry was clear from an early age when he was accepted into the Juilliard Pre-College Division on a full scholarship at the age of ten to study with Yoheved Kaplinsky.  A two-time winner of the Juilliard Pre-College Piano Competition, he made his debut with the New York Philharmonic in Avery Fisher Hall at the age of 13.  Additional concerto engagements include the New Jersey Symphony, Tulsa Symphony, Orlando Philharmonic, Hilton Head Symphony and Sendai Symphony Orchestra in addition to the Baltimore and New York appearances.

The pianist’s broad musical interests allow him to move with ease between concertos, recitals and chamber music, enjoying appearances around the world at important venues including the Louvre and Salle Cortot in France, National Dublin Hall in Ireland, Seoul Arts Center in Korea, Sendai Cultural Center in Japan, and Avery Fisher Hall in the United States.  Recent recitals debuts include the National Chopin Foundation in Miami and the International Piano Series in Charleston.  Steven Lin has appeared on radio broadcasts including NPR’s From The Top and WQXR’s McGraw Hill Young Artist Showcase.

During the CAG Competition, Mr. Lin’s compelling artistry was further recognized with a special piano prize.  Also in 2012, he was a prizewinner at the William Kapell International Competition, The Juilliard School’s Gina Bachauer Piano Competition and he claimed an unprecedented three honors at the 2012 International Hilton Head Piano Competition, cited for his excellence in baroque and contemporary music as well as his overall pianism.

Steven Lin earned both Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees at The Juilliard School, studying with Robert McDonald and Matti Raekallio.  In fall 2013 he will pursue a Performance Diploma from the Curtis Institute of Music, under the guidance of Robert McDonald.  When not making music, Steven Lin describes himself as an “NBA basketball fanatic,” a source of great pride and commitment which began when he was eight years old.

The Hot Sardines at Wildwood Tonight!

Wildwood Park for the ArtsThe Hot Sardines will be in concert tonight at Wildwood Park for the Arts.  The music will start at 8pm; tickets range from $35 to $75.

Take a blustery brass lineup, layer it over a rhythm section led by a stride-piano virtuoso in the Fats Waller vein, and tie the whole thing together with a one-of-the-boys frontwoman with a voice from another era, and you have the Hot Sardines. (We haven’t even told you about the tap dancer yet.)

In a short time, the Hot Sardines have gone from their first gig – at a coffeeshop on the last Q train stop in Queens – to selling out Joe’s Pub five times in as many months, headlining at Lincoln Center’s Midsummer Night Swing, and opening for the Bad Plus, Lulu Gainsbourg and French gypsy-jazz artist Zaz. Through it all they’ve become regulars at the Shanghai Mermaid speakeasy and turned The Standard, where they play regularly, into their own “saloon in the sky” (The Wall Street Journal) – complete with tap dancing on the bar – honing a live persona that’s been called “unforgettably wild” and “consistently electrifying” (Popmatters).

The Sardine sound – wartime Paris via New Orleans, or the other way around – is steeped in hot jazz, salty stride piano, and the kind of music Louis Armstrong, Django Reinhardt and Waller used to make: Straight-up, foot-stomping jazz. (Literally – the band includes a tap dancer whose feet count as two members of the rhythm section). They manage to invoke the sounds of a near-century ago and stay resolutely in step with the current age. And while their roots run deep into jazz, that most American of genres, they’re intertwined with French influences via their frontwoman, who was born and raised in Paris (and writes songs in both languages).

The band was born when said Parisian (“Miz Elizabeth” Bougerol) met a stride piano player (bandleader Evan “Bibs” Palazzo) at a jam session they found on Craigslist. Above a noodle shop on Manhattan’s 49th Street, they discovered a mutual love for songs from the 1920s, ’30s and ’40s that no-one really plays anymore. Or if they play them, “they handle them with kid gloves, like pieces in a museum,” says Evan, underscoring a point the pair can’t stress enough: “This music isn’t historical artifact. It’s a living, breathing, always-evolving thing.”

The hosts for the evening are: Dr. F. Richard Jordan, Gert Clark, Lee and Dale Ronnel, Jane Wilson, Buff Blass and Walt Winters
