Funkanites are an eight piece Little Rock -based Afrobeat, Soul, and Funk ensemble. The lineup features members of other Little Rock bands such as Amasa Hines, Velvet Kente, and Twice Sax to name a few. To say the band is well seasoned is an understatement. They are quite capable of handling any genre thrown at them, however, their focus is heavily on late 60’s and 70’s Afrobeat, Soul, and Funk with a contemporary spin on the genres.

Big bombastic horn lines are the norm, as well as an airtight rhythm section that stretches and sews the pocket but never leaves it. Though almost entirely instrumental, some of the members have been known to sing on a traditional Afrobeat tune or two. They are ambassadors of a music that is not so readily available in a live setting in this day and age. They will move you.

Nick Black is fun, optimistic, and authentic. His music is a full-embodied piece of art that will change your whole mood instantly. Influenced by the feel good music of Justin Timberlake, Al Green, Sting, and Bruno Mars, Nick has created his music to sound unique, yet familiar and nostalgic. He sees the world through a very clear lens where he takes people and experiences for what they are while also learning from them as they are. In return, both him and his music are true, honest, perceptive, and passionate.

Always wanting to be a star and perform on a stage in front of as many people as the eye could see, Nick Black is determined now more than ever to reach and exceed his goals. His stage presence is proof that he was always destined to be an entertainer. Nick pulls the audience in and doesn’t let them go. He creates an experience that he wants everyone to be part of. Pulling people up from the crowd, he has people dancing and grooving front and center.

Nick Black is quickly becoming one of the most recognizable names in the Pop/Soul music scene. He grew up between two worlds: his family’s deep ties to church, and Memphis where Soul, RnB, Rock N’ Roll, and Blues legends made names for themselves, Black’s sound is an organically grown phenomenon. Since his first album in 2012, The Soul Diaries, his authenticity and passion has been the foundation of his identity, both as a person and as an artist. Venturing into new territory with his recently released single, “Grenadine”, Nick is excited to pursue his curiosity in electronic music, adding dance beats to his extremely versatile sound.

On April 18, 1989 La’Chaz Holloway would be the sixth child born to his parents. Being deeply rooted in multiple genres of music, La’Chaz would soon fall in love with music and begin his own journey as a guitarist/ producer/singer/songwriter. La’Chaz has worked with and played for many artists such as TANK, Carl Thomas, Case, SAMMIE, etc.. “One of Arkansas’ best bands” and “great hip-hop ensemble” are phrases often used to describe the collective known as Big Piph & Tomorrow Maybe. However, although they are deserving of both titles, these descriptions have proven to be far too confining. The creativity, discipline, and showmanship that BPTM put into their jazz, soul, funk, and rock infused hip-hop experiences will soon have them recognized as one of the best bands… period.

While already enjoying a successful solo rap career, Epiphany looked to further separate himself from the pack of competitive emcees by joining forces with a stellar live band, and in 2012 he did just that. Each of the seven members approaches the apex of their field and is a “frontman” in their own right. However, when their paths finally overlapped, the collective of (l-to-r) Paul Campbell (percussion), Dre Franklin (keys), Bijoux Pighee (vocals), Epiphany “Big Piph” Morrow (MC/lead vocalist), Dee Dee Jones (vocals), “Cool Hand” Lucas Murray (guitar), and Corey Harris (bass) formed something special.

Although the band has mostly displayed its energetic, interactive performances at Arkansas’ finest venues and festivals including Juneteenth, The Rev Room, Maxine’s, George’s Majestic Lounge, South on Main, U of A, and Ron Robinson Theatre, and Riverfest, they recently went international by completing an early 2015 African tour of Morocco, Algeria, and Equatorial Guinea. Sponsored by the U.S. department of state and American Music Abroad, the band not only held concerts for enthusiastic audiences, but also engaged in cultural engaged in cultural exchange with artists, students, and creatives by conducting workshops, speaking engagements, and musical collaborations. Still, whether at home or abroad, the band’s aim is always to provide the people not just a show, but a musical experience to remember… and that’s what Big Piph & Tomorrow Maybe deliver every time.

Jazz in the Park kicks off with Bijoux tonight

Jazz in the Park is a free happy hour style event featuring different Jazz musicians weekly from 6pm-8pm in the History Pavilion in Riverfront Park. Family and Pet Friendly.  It is offered each Wednesday in April and September.

First up is Bijoux.
