Funkanites are an eight piece Little Rock -based Afrobeat, Soul, and Funk ensemble. The lineup features members of other Little Rock bands such as Amasa Hines, Velvet Kente, and Twice Sax to name a few. To say the band is well seasoned is an understatement. They are quite capable of handling any genre thrown at them, however, their focus is heavily on late 60’s and 70’s Afrobeat, Soul, and Funk with a contemporary spin on the genres.

Big bombastic horn lines are the norm, as well as an airtight rhythm section that stretches and sews the pocket but never leaves it. Though almost entirely instrumental, some of the members have been known to sing on a traditional Afrobeat tune or two. They are ambassadors of a music that is not so readily available in a live setting in this day and age. They will move you.

ABOUT THE CURATOR
Bijoux—a native of Little Rock – is a sultry soul singer adept in various styles. The daughter of West African parents, Bijoux grew up in a household exposed to differing genres of music including folk, classic rock and roll, makossa, country, and R&B. Her jovial spirit, endearing vocals, vibrant entertaining, and musical versatility make her concerts engaging and fun.

ISessions :: Joshua Asante x Nirvana Unpluggedn honor of her April birthday, Amy Bell is curating April Sessions by choosing her favorite local musicians to cover her favorite artists. For the second Wednesday in April,  Joshua Asante will transport us to the early 90’s with the music from the Nirvana Unplugged album.

ABOUT JOSHUA ASANTE

Musician, photographer, a sometimes poet; art informs most aspects of Joshua Asante’s life. Joshua is a guitarist and lead vocalist for two bands, Velvet Kente and Amasa Hines. The latter of two released their first full-length album, All The World There Is, to widespread critical acclaim in early 2014. Whether he is behind a camera lens or onstage with a band, or even alone a poet; the aim remains the same. Clarity, positivity, and ascension through art.

talesfromsouthWildwood welcomes Tales from the South and a Tin Roof Project featuring Nancy Nolan this Tuesday, November 10th. The event includes a Community Conversation featuring exhibiting artist Nancy Nolan, Dave Anderson, Park Lanford, and Ken Clark of Chenal Family Therapy. Live music will be performed by Joshua Asante, lead singer in Amasa Hines and Velvet Kente bands.

“Tales From the South” is a radio show created and produced by Paula Martin Morell.“Tales from the South” is a showcase of writers reading their own true stories. While the show itself is unrehearsed, the literary memoirs have been worked on for weeks leading up to the readings. Stories range from funny to touching, from everyday occurrences to life-altering tragedies.

Acansa day 4The fourth day of this year’s ACANSA Arts Festival offers dance, theatre, music and art!

 

The Urban Bush Women – 7pm (North Little Rock Middle School Auditorium) $20 (general admission); $50 (The Story Continues); $10 students/military

The Urban Bush Women (UBW) keep history alive by presenting dancers that tell stories from the perspective of women in the African diaspora.  This non-profit dance company, based in Brooklyn, New York was founded in 1984 by Jawole Willa Jo Zollar.  This group of seven women have performed their diverse pieces across the USA, Europe, Asia and Australia.  UBW previously presented at Spoleto USA and other festivals and received a number of honors including the Capezio Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dance and the Doris Duke Award for New Work from the American Dance Festival to name a few.

“Blood at the Root” – 8pm (Argenta Community Theatre) $30 (general admission) $15 (students/military)

Based on a true story of the Jena Six, Blood at the Root, written by Dominique Morriseau, is a play that touches on many social issues. Directed by Steve Broadnax, head of the Pennsylvania State theatre program, this play has received international acclaim on its tours through South Africa, Scotland and Australia. It is an exciting piece of work that breaks traditional convention. It speaks to where America is right now racially, economically, and socially. It is also a fun show with musicality, and an emphasis on movement. The inclusion of many different perspectives makes for an exciting, thought provoking performance. Please note: This performance contains strong language.

“Avant-Garde Late Night: Rocktown Distillery with Amasa Hines” – 9pm (Rocktown Distillery) $20 (general admission) 

Join ACANSA’s Avant-Garde at the Rock Town Distillery to dance to the music of Amasa Hines.  Amasa Hines is a seven piece, Little Rock, Arkansas based band whose sound is as big as their influences are wide. Their influences come from a diverse range of Soul, Afro-Beat, Psychedelic, Blues, Dub, and Indie Rock. Refreshments will be served including beer and wine.  Cocktails available for purchase.

A Little Poetry: The Art of Alonzo Ford will be on view until October 25, 2015 in the Arkansas Arts Center’s Sam Strauss, Jr., Gallery.

The Angela Davis Johnson Exhibit will be on display at the Argenta Gallery all day today (and through October 12). It has free admission as well.

About Amasa Hines – Creative influence is a tempest. Many artists find themselves buffeted about by desires to embody the standards of those they admire. Some never find balance or come to know authenticity. Amasa Hines strives against the current of these truths in an attempt to distill their respective cadences in a singularity. The sound is a tapestry of history and imagination; fusing the psychedelic and the chant with blues poetry and the African’s back beat.

The six piece includes brothers Judson and Joshua Spillyards, Ryan Hitt, Matt Rice, Norman Williamson and Joshua Asante. The band completed their first studio LP All The World There Is in 2014 and is currently touring with that release.

About The Hudson Branch – For the past six years four brothers from Chicago have been busy using their love of pop music to build a mini-empire under the name The Hudson Branch. They’ve collaborated with NPR’s popular and innovative podcast Radiolab, shared the stage with English new wave pioneers New Order, and performed experimental live shows alongside media giants Google and Disney. They’ve also recorded and produced three ambitious albums.
