Harry Potter Marathon continues with THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS

RRT HP 0727Harry continues to discover his destiny as the Central Arkansas Library System’s (CALS)  Ron Robinson Theater ‘s (RRT) Harry Potter Movie Marathon shows with Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

Cars fly, trees fight back and a mysterious elf comes to warn Harry Potter at the start of the second year of his amazing journey into the world of wizardry. This year at Hogwarts, spiders talk, letters scold and Harry’s own unsettling ability to speak to snakes turns his friends against him. From dueling clubs to rogue Bludgers, it’s a year of adventure and danger when bloody writing on a wall announces: The Chamber of Secrets has been opened. To save Hogwarts will require all of Harry, Ron and Hermione’s magical abilities and courage.
This 2002 film was directed by Chris Columbus.  Returning to the cast are Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, Richard Harris, Maggie Smith, Robbie Coltrane, Fiona Shaw, Richard Griffiths, Julie Walters, John Cleese, Alan Rickman, Bonnie Wright, Chris Rankin, James Phelps, Oliver Phelps, Matthew Lewis, Tom Felton and Devon Murray. Among the new cast members were Toby Jones, Jim Norton, Mark Williams, Jason Isaacs, Kenneth Branagh, David Bradley and Miriam Margolyes.

The screening of all eight movies from Sunday, July 26 – Saturday, August 1 will celebrate Harry Potter’s July 31 birthday. Special Harry Potter-themed concessions, activities, and prizes are part of the festivities at 100 River Market Avenue.

Tickets are $7 each for single tickets. Concessions will be available for purchase at every showing, and beer and wine are available at screenings scheduled after 5 p.m.

Some planned activities for movie-goers include being sorted into Hogwarts houses, competing for House Cup points, photo booths, and a horcrux scavenger hunt.

Unique treats include candy from Kilwin’s and magical ice cream from Loblolly Creamery. Doors open and activities begin one hour before show time.

The movies continue in order through Friday at 7pm.  On Saturday the final two films will be shown at 1pm and 7pm.

Harry Potter Marathon starts with HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER’S STONE at 6pm

RRT HP 0726Go back to the beginning as the Central Arkansas Library System’s (CALS)  Ron Robinson Theater ‘s (RRT) Harry Potter Movie Marathon kicks off with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. (Or … and the Philosopher’s Stone for those who read the book or watched the film across the pond.)
Harry Potter, an orphaned child that has spent the first ten years of his life living under the stairs of his aunt and uncle’s house, is invited to join the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He learns his destiny lies in the realm of magic and fantasy.
This 2001 film was directed by Chris Columbus.  It introduced audiences to Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint as the central trio of students at Hogwarts.  Surrounding them were British acting legends Richard Harris, Maggie Smith, Robbie Coltrane, Fiona Shaw, Richard Griffiths, Ian Hart, John Hurt, Julie Walters, John Cleese, Alan Rickman and Zoe Wanamaker.  Others in the cast included Bonnie Wright, Chris Rankin, James Phelps, Oliver Phelps, Matthew Lewis, Tom Felton and Devon Murray.

Monty Python, Rocky Horror and a Harry Potter Marathon highlight summer films at Ron Robinson Theater

cals ronrob intThe Central Arkansas Library System’s (CALS) Ron Robinson Theater is making use of it’s state-of-the-art technology in a space that produces the feeling of an old-time grand movie theater. The movies and special events scheduled in the upcoming months celebrate everything from kid flicks, great directors, and classic movies to independent and documentary films. We’ll celebrate holidays with paranormal theater and seasonal films and rewind back to special anniversaries.

Special events include the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the films Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Rocky Horror Picture Show. A Harry Potter marathon will celebrate Harry Potter’s July 31 birthday by showing all eight movies in seven days, and special Harry Potter-themed concessions.

Tickets are $5 each, with the exception of the Harry Potter marathon.  Potter marathon tickets are $7 each or a pass for all eight movies for $40. Concessions will be available for purchase at every showing. Beer and wine are available at screenings scheduled after 5 p.m.

CALS-Con 2015 today

cals_conFans of superheroes, Game of Thrones, Doctor Who, Harry Potter, comics, and gaming will converge on the Central Arkansas Library System’s (CALS) 2nd Annual CALS Con on Saturday, May 30, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m on the Main Library campus, 100 Rock Street. All CALS Con events are free and open to the public.

CALS Con is a family-friendly celebration of all things fandom. The event kicks off the library’s 2015 superhero-themed Summer Reading Club, Every Hero Has a Story. Fans of all ages may come dressed as their favorite character. The day will include six panels, a social media scavenger hunt, table top gaming, LEGO display and open building, drop-in gaming area, and a meet up area. The first 700 people to register for the event will receive a special CALS Con swag bag.

CALS Con will conclude with a cosplay contest at the CALS Ron Robinson Theater, 100 River Market Avenue. Attendees are encouraged to post about their CALS Con experience on social media using #CALScon2015.

March Madness at Central Arkansas Library System

The Central Arkansas Library System (CALS) is throwing a twist into the traditional March Madness bracket. 

Beginning March 1, all CALS branches will be bracketing locations for Heroes and Villains: Character Face-Off, a bracket competition to determine CALS patrons’ favorite literary character. 

The Heroes and Villains bracket includes sixteen characters; eight heroes and eight villains. Each week, patrons may vote for their favorite character at http://www.cals.org, at any CALS branch, or both. There is no limit to how many times participants can vote. 

During the week of March 2-March 8, patrons can try to predict the ultimate winner of the Heroes and Villains: Character Face-Off bracket competition for a chance to win a $100 VISA gift card.

HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER’S STONE tonight at Movies in the Park

MitP10 HarryPotterA magical summer evening is certainly in store with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. 

Chris Columbus directed this 2001 movie, which kicked off what proved to be a successful film franchise, replicating the success of the books.

Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson play the central trio of youngsters. Richard Harris, Maggie Smith, Alan Rickman, Robbie Coltrane, Fiona Shaw, Richard Griffiths, John Hurt and Julie Walters are some of the esteemed British actors who play adult roles in the movie.

Now in its 10th season, Movies in the Park is a free outdoor film series at the First Security Amphitheater in Riverfront Park.  The move starts at dark (around 8:30).

Movies in the Park has grown to a season of eight films per year, on average, reaching audiences of up to 4,000 people. It’s a staple event in Central Arkansas. Communities from across the state, and the country, have reached out for guidance as they have tried to implement similar programs in the own communities.

Since 2008, the Little Rock Convention & Visitors Bureau has been managing Movies in the Park.
