The Little Rock Convention & Visitors Bureau continues the new series of free jazz concerts tonight. Adam Collins Group is featured tonight.
Jazz in the Park will be every Wednesday night in June and July from 5:30pm to 7:30pm. They will take place in the History Pavilion in Riverfront Park (between the Junction Bridge and Peabody Park).
Beer & Wine will be available for sale – portions of the proceeds will benefit Sculpture at the River Market…so no coolers, please. Free to attend!
Today is Father’s Day. In honor of that, today’s Sculpture Vulture revisits Tim Cherry’s Rabbit Reach. The sculpture was given in memory of two fathers.
The sculpture is a gift from Whitlow Wyatt and the Carey Cox Wyatt Charitable Foundation. It was given in memory of George Wyatt and Frank Kumpuris. Those two gentlemen were the fathers of Whitlow Wyatt and Dean & Drew Kumpuris.
The sculpture is located at the corner of Sherman Street and President Clinton Avenue across from the Museum of Discovery.
Cherry’s sculpture was selected for this spot because of its proximity to children at the Museum and in the River Market district. The design and size of the sculpture encourages children to climb on it and to play around the rabbit.
While some public art is situated so it cannot be touched, this one is situated to be touched as part of the appreciation experience.
For a movie series that starts at twilight, it is appropriate that Movies in the Park kicks off the 2013 season tonight in Riverfront Park with the 2011 hit film Twilight: Breaking Dawn, Part 1. The fourth in the vampire/werwolf saga, it is directed by Bill Condon.
The film stars Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner, Anna Kendrick, Peter Facinelli, Kellan Lutz, Billy Burke, Ashley Greene, Jackson Rathbone, Elizabeth Reaser and Nikki Reed.
Movies in the Park is a free outdoor movie series in Little Rock’s River Market. They take place at the First Security Amphitheatre. The mission of Movies in the Park is help foster a sense of community and enjoyment in downtown Little Rock and throughout Central Arkansas by bringing people together to enjoy a movie in a unique setting along the scenic banks of the Arkansas River.
Movies start at dark. Visitors are welcome to bring picnics but please no glass containers and pick up afterwards. Those choosing not to bring their own picnic, the park does have concessions available for sale.
Bring bug spray, picnic and family and have a good time!

In support of and in cooperation with the 36th annual Riverfest, the Museum of Discovery and Clinton Presidential Center are offering visitors special deals on Memorial Day Weekend.
Both major River Market attractions will offer $5 admission all weekend – Friday-Monday, May 24-27 for the Clinton Center and Saturday-Monday, May 25-27, for the museum, which will be closed Friday, May 24.
Also, for Clinton Center, Clinton Museum Store and Museum of Discovery patrons not attending Riverfest, there will be free parking and a free round-trip shuttle from the designed lot located between 4th and 5th streets and Collins Street to each of the attractions.
“Riverfest will bring around 250,000 people to our backyard over Memorial Day Weekend,” said Kelley Bass, CEO of the Museum of Discovery. “A large part of the festival will take place on the grounds of the Clinton Center and Heifer International, so it only makes sense for us to join our neighbors and welcome Riverfest patrons to the museum.”
Besides $5 admission – which equals half-price for adults and $3 off for children – Bass said the museum is offering special programs at the museum throughout the holiday weekend to give people even more reason to visit. Museum educators also will be on-site at Riverfest doing hands-on “tinkering” activities with festival-goers at the Deltic Timber Kidzone Area from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, May 25, and from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday, May 26.
In addition to engaging with the 85 hands-on, interactive exhibits, museum visitors on Memorial Day Weekend will be treated to a full schedule of special programs, with “The Electric Show,” “Awesome Science” and “Meet the Museum Animals” being presented in rotation, on the hour, from noon until 4 p.m. Saturday, May 25; 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 26; and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, May 27.
Also, Tommy’s Terrific Magic Show, which will be presented Sunday at Riverfest, will be featured at 1 p.m. Saturday at the museum.

This rounded brick work can be found in the La Harpe’s building on President Clinton Avenue and Rock Street. Over the decades this building has housed a variety of stores, offices and restaurants. This photo was taken outside of the KATV River Market studio.
The pyramid capped bricks are found on the building now known as the River Market Ottenheimer Hall. This detail can be found on the eastern end of the building above the first floor. The building was designed by Illinois native Charles Thompson and Canadian Fred Rickon who formed a partnership in Little Rock in 1891. The pair were in a partnership until 1897; the firm continues today as the Cromwell firm.
The repurposed building opened in 1996 as the River Market’s anchor along President Clinton Avenue between Rock Street and River Market Avenue.

Laurel Peterson Gregory’s Bunny Bump is featured in the Vogel Schwartz Sculpture Garden. Two stylized rabbits make for an interesting piece of artwork when they are not only dancing, but also doing the butt bump while dancing. The smooth surface and color of the bronze add to the illusion. This small piece has been placed on a pedestal to elevate more to eye level.
The sculpture was completed in 2009 and installed in 2010. Gregory has been featured at the Sculpture at the River Market show. (The photo was taken during a December snow. It may be cold now, but not enough for that amount of snow.)
