2005 film version of RENT on screen at CALS Ron Robinson Theater tonight (2/5)

Rent movie poster.jpgLast week, Fox network screen a “live” version of the musical RENT.  Tonight at the CALS Ron Robinson Theater, the 2005 film version of this Pulitzer and Tony-winning musical will be shown. The film is being shown one day after what would have been the 59th birthday of the composer/writer Jonathan Larson.

Many of the original 1996 Broadway cast members appeared in the film.  Anthony Rapp, Adam Pascal, Jesse L. Martin, Wilson Jermain Heredia, Idina Menzel, and Taye Diggs all recreated their Broadway assignments for the film. Rosario Dawson replaced Daphne Rubin-Vega, and Tracie Thoms replaced Fredi Walker for the film.

Larson’s script was adapted to a screenplay by Stephen Chbosky. Christopher Columbus directed the film and was one of the producers along with Jane Rosenthal, Robert De Niro, Mark Radcliffe, and Michael Barnathan.

The film begins at 7pm at the Ron Robinson Theater. Admission is $5.00.

Don’t Refuse THE GODFATHER, PART II tonight at the Ron Robinson Theater

RRT g2Arguably the best sequel ever, The Godfather, Part II is the only sequel to win the Oscar for Best Picture after the original film also won that award.  Francis Ford Coppola’s 1974 epic examines both the rise of Michael Corleone and the early days of his father Vito Corleone.

Al Pacino returns as Michael with Robert De Niro taking on the role of younger Vito.  Both men were nominated for Oscars with De Niro taking home the Best Supporting Actor award.  Others in the cast include the return of Diane Keaton, John Cazale, Robert Duvall, Talia Shire, Abe Vigoda and James Caan along with newcomers Lee Strasberg, Michael V. Gazzo, and Troy Donohue.  Danny Aiello, Bruno Kirby and Harry Dean Stanton can also be seen in small parts.

The screenplay was by Coppola and Mario Puzo, on whose novel the first two films were based.  The Godfather, Part II was nominated for 11 Oscars. In addition to De Niro’s win and the Best Picture trophy, it won for Director (Coppola), Screenplay (Coppola and Puzo), Art Direction and Score.

Tonight at 7pm, this big film returns to the big screen as the Ron Robinson Theatre screens it as part of the Great Directors series.  Tickets are $5, with concessions available for purchase as well.

Three times the films at Ron Robinson Theatre today

Today at 2pm, 7pm and 10pm – the Ron Robinson Theater will be showing films from three film series.

The scientist father of a teenage girl and boy accidentally shrinks his and two other neighborhood teens to the size of insects. Now the teens must fight diminutive dangers as the father searches for them.

LR Film Fest Rooftop Screening of BLOODY MAMA

lrff_mp_hdr_logoThe Little Rock Film Festival is hosting its first ever Rooftop Screening featuring ‘Bloody Mama’- a classic gangster film featuring Robert De Niro and Robert Walden. It will be tonight at 7pm atop the River Market Tower.

What better way to spend an evening under the stars than watching a movie with a star in the audience? Actor Robert Walden will join the audience on the rooftop for this special screening and will discuss his role in the film.

The event is free, but purchase of an 2013 LRFF pass is required to attend this screening.

Directed by Roger Corman, Bloody Mama was filmed in the Ozark mountains of Arkansas and tells the story of  machine gun totin’ Ma Barker, who lead her family gang (her sons) on a crime spree in the Depression era.Robert Walden plays Fred Barker in the film, who has just been released from prison, and Robert De Niro plays Lloyd Barker, a spaced-out drug addict who sniffs glue if nothing better is around.

During his long an successful career as a Hollywood actor, three time Emmy nominated actor Robert Walden has acted alongside many of the Hollywood greats including George C. Scott, Anthony Hopkins and Dusti Hoffman and has worked with director such as Woody Allen,, Martin Scorcese and Alan Pakula.

Walden currently stars in the new TV land sitcom, Happily Divorcedwith Fran Drescher and Rita Moreno. He will also star in the Arkansas Repertory Theater’s version of Death of a Salesman as Willy Loman, running April 24th to May 12th www.therep.org
