Jazz in the Park returns with Rodney Block and the Real Music Lovers tonight from 6pm to 8pm in Riverfront Park

jazzinparkJazz in the Park is back in Little Rock for the second half of the second season! Jazz in the Park is a free, family-friendly event featuring jazz in downtown Little Rock.

Things get going tonight from 6pm to 8pm with Rodney Block & the Real Music Lovers.  Block is a Dumas native who has been thriving in the local music scene for the past couple of years. A trumpeter who has been featured and performed in various venues across the region ranging from corporate to social, he has built a niche in the genres of jazz and hip hop. Notable artists he has shared the stage with include Dwele, Jonathan Butler, Dave Hollister, Wynton Marsalis, and Eric Roberson. In 2007, Block’s televised jazz feature, AETN Presents: Front Row with Rodney Block, was nominated for a Regional Emmy.

The event is completely free, but no coolers are allowed. Beer, wine, soft drinks and water will be available for sale, with a portion of the proceeds going to benefit Sculpture at the River Market. Lawn chairs and blankets are welcome, and there is some seating in the natural stone amphitheater at the History Pavilion.

This event is sponsored by Little Rock Convention and Visitors Bureau and the River Market, with special thanks to Arkansas Sounds Music Festival and the Central Arkansas Library System.

Jazz in the Park takes place Wednesday nights in September from 6pm to 8pm. They will take place in the History Pavilion near the Junction Bridge and the River Market.

The Studio Theatre celebrates grand opening today

studiotheatreLittle Rock’s newest live performance venue, The Studio Theatre and The Lobby Bar, will celebrate its grand opening this Thursday, July 31. The celebration begins at 2pm with a ribbon cutting hosted by the Little Rock Chamber of Commerce. A reception follows along with theatre tours and live musical performances in The Lobby Bar until 1am.

Located in downtown Little Rock, this is a 99 seat venue. “There are other live performance spaces within walking distance of The Studio Theatre,” says President of the Board and Musical Director, Bob Bidewell. “Lovers of the performing arts now have another first class performance space to consider when making their plans.”

In August, The Studio Theatre and Lobby Bar have a schedule of  productions:

Monday’s at 8pm- Open Mic Night (Lobby Bar-FREE Admission)

August 7- Songwriters Rena Wren & Rodger King (Lobby Bar- FREE Admission)

August 15 & 16- Broadway Concert (Studio Theatre- Ticket Price: $12)

August 29- Rodney Block (Studio Theatre- Ticket Prices: $10-$25)

August 30- Arkansas’ Masters of Illusion (Studio Theatre- Ticket Prices to be announced)

Additionally, Community Theatre of Little Rock recently moved to The Studio Theatre and just wrapped up sold out performances of Rent. CTLR’s next performance is a series of One Acts and runs August 22-24. Visit www.ctlr-act.org for details.

QQA 50th Spring Tour this weekend

QQA_SpringTourLogo_COLORThe QQA will be celebrating its 50th Spring Tour this coming Mother’s Day weekend, May 10-11! This year, we’re holding the golden anniversary of the tour in the Governor’s Mansion Historic District. We’ve enlisted the help of Arkansas First Lady Ginger Beebe and P. Allen Smith as Honorary Co-Chairs to help us spread the word about our half-century anniversary. Shalah Brummett and Anthony Black will be leading our volunteer committee to make all the arrangements, and we’re excited to have the help of several other former Tour Chairs. The tour will include the Arkansas Governor’s Mansion and five houses within easy walking distance: the Cochran Cottage, Pierce House, Turner-Back House, Caruth-Cachran House and the Old Methodist Parsonage.

Jazz in the Park: June 5 – Rodney Block

jazzinparkThe Little Rock Convention & Visitors Bureau is kicking off a new series of free jazz concerts tonight.  Tonight’s featured musician is Rodney Block and the Real Music Lovers.

Jazz in the Park will be every Wednesday night in June and July from 5:30pm to 7:30pm. They will take place in the History Pavilion in Riverfront Park (between the Junction Bridge and Peabody Park).

Beer & Wine will be available for sale – to benefit Sculpture at the River Market…so no coolers, please. Free to attend!
