Flag Day Concert in MacArthur Park tonite

flagdayOn Saturday, June 8, the MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History will host the 17th annual Flag Day concert, A Stars and Stripes Celebration, featuring the Little Rock Wind Symphony.

The concert begins at 7:00 p.m. and is free to the public.

Our annual Flag Day salute to the red, white, and blue, features hand-clapping marches, flag-waving patriotic songs, toe-tapping happy tunes.  There will be free American flags, ice cream and water.

The program will featured Timothy Tucker, baritone in selections with the LR Wind Symphony, under the direction of Dr. Karen Fannin.  The performance will include:

  • Sousa: Who’s Who in Navy Blue

flagdayaudienceBring a picnic dinner for your family, lawn chairs or a blanket, and enjoy the concert at historic MacArthur Park in downtown Little Rock.   Dogs on leashes are welcome — and don’t forget there is a new dog park in MacArthur Park as well.

Black Hound Barbecue and Hot Dog Mike will be available to purchase food as well.  In the event of rain, the concert will be rescheduled for Sunday, June 9.

LIGHTS! CAMERA! ARKANSAS! opens at Old State House

LCA_topThe Old State House Museum’s newest exhibit opens tonight.  Lights! Camera! Arkansas!  celebrates the connection between Arkansas and Hollywood on the silver screen and TV.

Artifacts related to films shot on location in the state, actors born in Arkansas, and literary figures whose works were the basis for films shot in Arkansas will be included in the exhibit. Visitors will see five galleries of costumes, scripts, film footage, awards, photographs, theater posters, and props. Documentary videos will add to their understanding and appreciation of Arkansas’s role in American film.

Visitors will be able to watch the videos in a newly-constructed theater room. The Old State House Museum commissioned original paintings of the state’s Hollywood-famous by House-of-Blues artists Patterson and Barnes. These fourteen portraits will portray Bronco Billy Anderson, Dick Powell, Alan Ladd, Gail Davis, Julie Adams, William Warfield, Louis Jordan, Johnny Cash, Glen Campbell, Levon Helm, Mary Steenburgen, Billy Bob Thornton, Lisa Blount, and Jeff Nichols.

The exhibit officially opens on Saturday, June 8.

Rembrandt, Van Dyck, Gainsborough at Arkansas Arts Center June 7-Sept 8

This special exhibition showcases 48 masterpieces from the collection known as the Iveagh Bequest. These magnificent paintings reside at Kenwood House, a neoclassical villa in London. The tour of Rembrandt, Van Dyck, Gainsborough: The Treasures of Kenwood House, London will provide a unique opportunity to view superb paintings outside the United Kingdom.

Most of these paintings have never traveled to the United States before, and many of them have rarely been seen outside Kenwood. The highly acclaimed works represent the greatest artists of their periods, including Rembrandt van Rijn, Thomas Gainsborough, Anthony van Dyck, Frans Hals, Joshua Reynolds, J.M.W. Turner and more.

Admission to this exhibition is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and $6 for youth/students.

The exhibition is organized by the American Federation of Arts and English Heritage. It is supported by an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities with additional funding from the Samuel H. Kress Foundation. In-kind support is provided by Barbara and Richard S. Lane.

LR Zoo Cheetah Chase on Saturday

cheetah-chase-logoJoin all the big cats for the best race in town! The Cheetah Chase 5K starts at the Little Rock Zoo and takes runners through the Hillcrest neighborhood and ends back at the front entrance of the Zoo. The 1K Family Fun Run starts and ends inside the Zoo.

All participants gets FREE Zoo admission all day on the day of the race, a free Penguin Pointe bag, and get a free race t-shirt. Participants are also encouraged to wear fun, family-friendly attire that is animal themed. Prizes will be given for best “big cat” costume and best animal costume.

5K & 1K Registration:  $35 per person/$65 per family of four (includes up to two adults and two children under the age of 12 or one adult and three children under the age of 12). Children under the age of one in strollers are admitted free.

Late registration will begin at 10 am on Friday, May 31, 2013 and continue through race day. Please see section below for specific locations and times.

Science After Dark: Tinkerfest Preview

scienceafterdarkThis month’s Science After Dark is on May 29 and will be “Can You Tinker Your Way Out of a Paper Bag: Tinkerfest Preview”. Some of the upcoming Tinkerfest activities will be available before the June 15 event.

Science after Dark occurs the last Wednesday of each month from 6pm to 8pm. Museum educators pick a science-related topic, and develop an event around it. The event is for ages 21 and older. General admission is $5 per person. Museum members get in free.

It is a great chance to explore the museum’s exhibits and enjoy downtown Little Rock.

Bauhaus architecture school focus of exhibit at Arkansas Arts Center

bauhausOrganized by Foto+Synthesis Incorporated, Bauhaus twenty-21: An Ongoing Legacy – Photographs by Gordon Watkinson runs through September 22.  

This exhibition conveys the architectural history, design and enduring philosophies of the Bauhaus, a German expression meaning “house for building” and the name of an important German School principle of architecture and design.

The exhibition offers a unique perspective on Bauhaus design philosophy as it relates to architecture and its relevance in today’s society. The Bauhaus school was founded by Walter Gropius in 1919 and introduced principles that shaped the foundation of modern architecture. Conceived as a project encompassing architecture, design and photography, Bauhaus twenty-21 not only conveys the architectural history, but also illustrates the enduring philosophies of the Bauhaus.

The exhibition is comprised of 77 photographs, plans and elevations and furniture that capture the essence of Bauhaus design and its influence on modern architecture and design.
