Arkansas Sounds lineup announced

arkansas_sounds_2013There’s something about the Arkansas River that makes free live music sound even better. DeQueen native Collin Raye and a tribute to Delight native Glen Campbell will headline the Arkansas Sounds Music Festival, a free annual event hosted by the Butler Center for Arkansas Studies, a department of the Central Arkansas Library System (CALS). On Friday and Saturday, September 27-28, the festival will feature Arkansas music and musicians both past and present at programs for all age groups at the River Market Pavilions, First Security Amphitheatre, and the Main Library.

Music in a large variety of genres and styles will showcase Arkansans’ love of music.

LIGHTS! CAMERA! ARKANSAS! opens at Old State House

LCA_topThe Old State House Museum’s newest exhibit opens tonight.  Lights! Camera! Arkansas!  celebrates the connection between Arkansas and Hollywood on the silver screen and TV.

Artifacts related to films shot on location in the state, actors born in Arkansas, and literary figures whose works were the basis for films shot in Arkansas will be included in the exhibit. Visitors will see five galleries of costumes, scripts, film footage, awards, photographs, theater posters, and props. Documentary videos will add to their understanding and appreciation of Arkansas’s role in American film.

Visitors will be able to watch the videos in a newly-constructed theater room. The Old State House Museum commissioned original paintings of the state’s Hollywood-famous by House-of-Blues artists Patterson and Barnes. These fourteen portraits will portray Bronco Billy Anderson, Dick Powell, Alan Ladd, Gail Davis, Julie Adams, William Warfield, Louis Jordan, Johnny Cash, Glen Campbell, Levon Helm, Mary Steenburgen, Billy Bob Thornton, Lisa Blount, and Jeff Nichols.

The exhibit officially opens on Saturday, June 8.

Farewell Glen Campbell

Delight native Glen Campbell is playing his farewell Little Rock concert tonight at Robinson Center Music Hall.

Glen Campbell will bring his Farewell Tour to Little Rock this fall. He is known for hits like 1967’s “Gentle on My Mind,” and “By the Time I Get to Phoenix”, as well as the 1975 single of the year “Rhinestone Cowboy.”  He also hosted a highly acclaimed (and rated) TV show in the early 1970s.

Campbell disclosed his Alzheimer’s diagnosis in June of 2011 prior to announcing his farewell tour.

Campbell, who has won eight Grammy Awards, learned of his diagnosis roughly six months prior to his public announcement.
