SHERLOCK HOLMES is tonight’s Movies in the Park feature

Little Rock’s own Movies in the Park, brought to you by the Little Rock Convention and Visitors Bureau and the City of Little Rock, continues its 11th annual season tonight, Wednesday, July 1 at the First Security Amphitheatre.

Movies are shown every Wednesday during the season and begin at sundown.

Guy Ritchie’s 2009 take on the classic Sir Arthur Conan Doyle creation stars Robert Downey Jr. as the title sleuth and Jude Law as his faithful sidekick Dr. Watson.  In this film, Holmes and Watson engage in a battle of wits and brawn with a nemesis whose plot is a threat to all of England.  The film also stars Rachel McAdams, Mark Strong, Eddie Marsan, Geraldine James, Robert Maillet, Kelly Reilly and Clive Russell.

Families, picnics and pets are invited to the park to enjoy movies under the stars, no glass containers please. A parent or adult guardian must accompany all children and youth under the age of 18 and an ID is required. The amphitheater will open an hour before film showings and movies will start at sundown each week. OZ is GREAT AND POWERFUL at tonight’s Movies in the Park

In Sam Raimi’s 2013 fantasy, a small-time magician is swept away to an enchanted land and is forced into a power struggle between three witches. James Franco stars in the title role with Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz, and Michelle Williams portraying the three witches. Others in the cast include Zach Braff, Bill Cobbs, Joey King and Tony Cox.

THE PROPOSAL on tap tonight at Movies in the Park

In this 2009 romcom, a pushy boss forces her young assistant to marry her in order to keep her Visa status in the U.S. and avoid deportation to Canada.  Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds play the central pair.  (In a real-life reversal, Reynolds is actually Canadian and Bullock is American.) Central Arkansas’ own Mary Steenburgen is also a star of the film.  Others in the cast include Craig T. Nelson, Betty White and Denis O’Hare.

GHOSTBUSTERS scares up the fun at tonight’s Movies in the Park

Ghostbusters is a 1984 action comedy thriller. Directed and produced by Ivan Reitman and written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis. The film stars Bill Murray, Aykroyd, and Ramis as three eccentric parapsychologists in New York City who start a ghost-catching business. Sigourney Weaver and Rick Moranis co-star as a client and her neighbor. Others in the cast include Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts, William Atherton, Alice Drummond and Reginald VelJohnson.

LR Look Back: The Rice Family and LR Auditorums

1906 LR auditoriumOn June 7, 1920, the Little Rock City Council finally authorized the demolition of Little Rock’s 1906 temporary auditorium.  The structure had originally been built as a skating rink which, when chairs were added, could be used for public meetings.  Since the mid 1910’s, the City Council had discussed tearing it down over safety concerns.  But since Little Rock had no other structure as a substitute, the Council kept delaying the decision.

J Rice 1920In 1920, though there was not alternative space available, the Council decided that the structure had to come down.  So City Engineer James H. Rice was authorized to have the building removed.

JimRice RobinsonToday, Rice’s grandson, also known as Jim Rice is the COO of the Little Rock Convention & Visitors Bureau.  In that capacity he is overseeing the renovation of Little Rock’s 1940 municipal auditorium – Robinson Center Music Hall.

Movies in the Park – DIVERGENT

Divergent is a 2014 action sci-fi thriller.  In a world divided by factions based on virtues, Tris learns she’s Divergent and won’t fit in. When she discovers a plot to destroy Divergents, Tris and the mysterious Four must find out what makes Divergents dangerous before it’s too late.  The cast includes Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Ashley Judd, Jai Courtney, Ray Stevenson, Zoe Kravitz, Miles Teller, Tony Goldwyn, Ansel Elgort, Maggie Q, Mekhi Phifer and Kate Winslet.

Little Rock Look Back: Cornice placed on Robinson Auditorium

JTR CorniceOn June 1, 1939, the cornice was installed on Robinson Auditorium.  This granite slab noted the name of the building as the Joseph Taylor Robinson Memorial Auditorium.  (It is interesting to note that it used the more modern “u” instead of the classical “v” which was often used in buildings during prior decades – as evidenced by the Pvlaski Covnty Covrt Hovse across the street.)

This was a milestone marking the completion of the front facade of the structure.  Much work would continue on the interior of the structure.  This step in the construction was considered major enough that the Arkansas Gazette mentioned it in a news article.

Today the cornice is again surrounded by construction materials and braces. The front lobby, the cornice and columns are pretty much the only parts of the building not currently under construction as Robinson Center is readied for its second act.  It is scheduled to open in November 2016.
