Civil War Little Rock Campaign commemorated tonight

macmusOn September 10, 1863, Confederate forces under General Sterling Price evacuated Little Rock in advance .of Federal forces, thus ending the Little Rock Campaign. By 5:00pm, his forces had left the city and at 7:00pm, civil authorities formally surrendered. Little Rock became the fourth Southern capital to come under Federal control.

To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Little Rock Campaign, the MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History will host a temporary exhibition of two Civil War flags from the 3rd Iowa Cavalry and the 37th Arkansas Infantry.

Troops from the 3rd Iowa Cavalry were among the first Federal troops to enter Little Rock and capture the Arsenal (in what is now MacArthur Park).  The flag from the 37th Arkansas Infantry was captured by Iowa forces at the Battle of Helena on July 4, 1863.  Members of the 37th Arkansas Infantry were among the Confederate soldiers in Little Rock in September 1863.

Both flags are on loan from the State Historical Museum, Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs and have never been exhibited in Arkansas before.

The exhibition is free and open to the public from September 11 through October 19.

There is a preview reception tonight from 5pm to 7pm at the museum. To commemorate the arrival of Federal troops into Little Rock on September 10, 1863, a symbolic lowering of the Confederate national flag and a raising of the Union guidon will take place in front of the museum at 5pm.

Partial funding for the exhibit is provided by the Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission, Little Rock Convention and Visitors Bureau and Radiology Associates PA.  The MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History is a program of the City of Little Rock’s Parks and Recreation Department.

Movies in the Park: THE AVENGERS

AvengersMovies in the Park concludes its 2013 season tonight.  It has been an all-star blockbuster summer.  So what better way to end it than by showing Joss Whedon’s all-star, blockbuster 2012 flick – THE AVENGERS.  The heroes will start saving the world tonight at dusk, so bring a picnic supper tonight to Riverfront Park and enjoy.

The film stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlette Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. Jackson and Gwyneth Paltrow. It also features the talents of Tom Hiddleston, Clark Gregg, Cobie Smulders, Stellan Skarsgard, Paul Bettany and Alexis Denisof.  Also appearing in the film are Powers Boothe, Jenny Agutter, Harry Dean Stanton, Stan Lee, Thomas Roberts and Lou Ferrigno.

The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Visual Effects.

Movies in the Park – BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY’S

215px-Breakfast_at_TiffanysYou can’t eat breakfast at Tiffany’s, but you can enjoy the classic film and have a picnic supper tonight in Riverfront Park.  Movies in the Park presents the 1961 classic Blake Edwards film tonight at dusk.

Based on Truman Capote’s novella, the film was one of Audrey Hepburn’s iconic roles.  Joining her in the cast were George Peppard, Patricia Neal, Martin Balsam, Buddy Ebsen and Mickey Rooney.  The film features the famous song “Moon River” which Hepburn sings at one point in the movie.  (Audiences at Movies in the Park may be able to see the moon reflected on the Arkansas River at some point in the evening.)

The film was nominated for five Academy Awards including Best Actress (Hepburn), Best Adapted Screenplay (George Axelrod) and Best Art Direction. It won the Oscars for Best Song – “Moon River” (Johnny Mercer and Henry Mancini) and Best Score (Mancini again).

Jazz in the Park – Dizzy 7

jazzinparkThe Little Rock Convention & Visitors Bureau continues Jazz in the Park tonight. The featured musicians are Dizzy 7

Dizzy7Logo-Small1Dizzy 7 plays music that ranges from Motown to Big Band, Latin to Dixie. It features a full rhythm section, a three-man horn section, and female and male vocalists. Dizzy 7 is composed of accomplished musicians who love what they do. In addition to playing private parties, fundraisers and weddings, the group performs a monthly gig at Dizzy’s Gypsy Bistro.  Joining Dizzy 7 will be vocalist Craig Wilson.

Jazz in the Park takes place Wednesday night in June and July from 5:30pm to 7:30pm. They will take place in the History Pavilion in Riverfront Park (between the Junction Bridge and Peabody Park).

Beer & Wine will be available for sale – to benefit Sculpture at the River Market…so no coolers, please. Free to attend!

 

Movies in the Park: FINDING NEMO

People trying to find a good and inexpensive time tonight, can go to Movies in the Park.  The feature is the 2003 film Finding Nemo.

This animated classic features the vocal talents of Albert Brooks, Ellen DeGeneres, Alexander Gould, Willem Dafoe, Brad Garrett, Allison Janney, Austin Pendleton, Stephen Root, Vicki Lewis, Geoffrey Rush and Elizabeth Perkins (featured in last week’s Big).

The film was nominated for four Academy Awards; it won the Best Animated Feature Oscar.

Jazz in the Park: The Happy Tymes Jazz Band

jazzinparkThe Little Rock Convention & Visitors Bureau continues Jazz in the Park tonight. The featured musicians are The Happy Tymes Jazz Band.

The Happy Tymes Jazz Band was formed in 1982 and has been entertaining audiences ever since. Based in Little Rock, this New Orleans style Dixieland jazz band has played at jazz festivals all over the country – from Sacramento Calif., to Tampa, Fla. They also play in private clubs, corporate conventions and for private parties throughout the country.

Jazz in the Park takes place Wednesday night in June and July from 5:30pm to 7:30pm. They will take place in the History Pavilion in Riverfront Park (between the Junction Bridge and Peabody Park).

Movies in the Park: BIG

215px-Big_PosterMovies in the Park has a big night tonight.  The feature is the 1988 film Big.  A quarter of a century after it was first released, this film still is hilarious and heartwarming.

Tom Hanks’s star turn cemented his status as a Hollywood leading man.  The film also firmly established Penny Marshall as a feature film director.

Joining Hanks in the cast are Elizabeth Perkins, Robert Loggia, John Heard, Jon Lovitz, Mercedes Ruehl, David Moscow and Jared Rushton.   The film was nominated for two Academy Awards: Hanks received his first ever Best Actor Oscar nomination and screenwriters Gary Ross and Anne Spielberg were nominated for Original Screenplay.
