October is Arts and Humanities Month nationally and in Little Rock. Americans for the Arts has identified a different arts topic to be posted for each day in the month.  Next up is Patterns.

One way to highlight patterns is to look at some in the Stitched Together exhibit at Historic Arkansas Museum. Quilting is a skill that was carried to the New World by immigrants.  However, in the almost two and half centuries since the colonies became states, quilting has evolved into a uniquely American tradition.

Quilting is all about patterns, sometimes repeating, sometimes in response. But it is all about patterns.

Quilts, Women in Ads focus of exhibits at Historic Arkansas Museum

In addition to the exhibit on 40 years of the Arkansas Times, Historic Arkansas Museum features several other exhibits.

The Great Arkansas Quilt Show 3 is a juried quilt show that celebrates contemporary Arkansas quilters and features more than 30 quilts from across the state. You’ll be surprised by the variety in size, technique and composition. These quilts are works of art.

Prizes were awarded for Best of Show, Best Hand Quilting and Best Machine Quilting, as well as awards in the following categories: Pieced, Appliqué, Mixedand Group.

The Great Arkansas Quilt Show 3 continues in the Horace C. Cabe Gallery through  May 3, 2015.

A Beauty on It Sells: Advertising Art from the collection of Marsha Stone

Women have been used in modern advertising since its inception.  Marsha Stone’s vintage collection of advertising materials from the late 19th and early 20th century showcases a rare glimpse into the world of advertising in days gone by.

The exhibit continues in the Study Gallery through  January 1, 2015.

 

Reel Classics with Rep: The Quilts of Gee’s Bend

quiltsofgeesbendIn conjunction with the upcoming play Gee’s Bend, the Arkansas Repertory Theatre’s monthly film series tonight will feature The Quilts of Gee’s Bend.  Reel Classics with the Rep starts at 6:00pm.

Set in the quiltmaker’s homes and yard, and told through the women’s voices, this music-filled, documentary takes viewers inside the art and fascinating living history of a uniquely American community and art form.

Prior to the film, members of The Rep’s creative team will discuss Elyzabeth Gregory Wilder’s play Gee’s Bend.  Reel Classics with the Rep takes place at the Laman Library in North Little Rock.

Gee’s Bend runs from Janury 23 through February 10.  Opening night if January 25.

The story of the women of Gee’s Bend has already touched millions who viewed their stunning work through a national exhibition tour and features on National Public Radio, Newsweek  and O Magazine.  “The Quilts of Gee’s Bend” have been exhibited at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art, among others.
