Annual LRSD Artistry in the Rock runs from March 12 to 15

The Little Rock School District’s annual celebration of the arts in the schools, Artistry in the Rock starts today and runs through Friday, March 15.

It is in a new location this year: Arkansas State Fairgrounds Hall of Industry Building.

A celebration and showcase of LRSD student talent in the performing & visual arts. FREE and Open to the Public!

2019 Governor’s Arts Award presented today

Governor Asa Hutchinson and the Arkansas Arkansas Council are presenting the 2019 Governor’s Arts Awards today in a lunchtime ceremony at the Arkansas Governor’s Mansion.

This year’s recipients are:

  • Arts Community Development Award-Steve Clark, Fort Smith
  • Arts in Education Award – The Center for Children and Youth, Fayetteville
  • Corporate Sponsorship of the Arts Award – Murphy USA, El Dorado
  • Folklife Award – Oxford American, Little Rock
  • Individual Artist Award – Marjorie Williams-Smith, Little Rock
  • Judges Recognition Award – Anthony Tidwell, Hot Springs
  • Patron Award – Jim and Joyce Faulkner, Little Rock
  • Lifetime Achievement Award – Billie Jo Starr, Fayetteville

In addition to videos highlighting each of the awardees and acceptance speeches, the program will feature remarks by Governor Hutchinson, Department of Arkansas Heritage Director Stacy Hurst and Arkansas Arts Council Director Patrick Ralston.

The recipients will each be presented with a custom made earthenware jar made by Springdale artist Gailen Hudson.

 

2nd Friday Art Night – REPtrospective at the Arkansas Rep

Whether you have a ticket to CHICAGO tonight or not, drop by Arkansas Repertory Theatre on Friday, March 8, between 5 – 8 p.m. to enjoy REPtrospective, the newest collection of local artwork displayed on our lobby walls.

Each featured artist in this collection has been a part of The Rep’s story and continues to support our future by donating a percentage of all artwork sold back to the theatre.

New shows, and returning favorites in 2019-2020 Celebrity Attractions season at Robinson Center

The five shows in the Celebrity Attractions 2019-2020 Broadway season in Little Rock were announced. They include four musicals and one play.  Two returning titles and three which will mark their debuts in the Little Rock market.

Up first is Jimmy Buffet’s Escape to Margaritaville. (November 1 – 3, 2019). It features many of Buffet’s standards as well as some original songs he wrote for the show.

Next is Wicked. Returning to Little Rock for the first time since 2013 (and the first time in the renovated Robinson Center Performance Hall), Wicked will kick off 2020 when it plays from January 1 through 19.

Waitress made Broadway history when it became the first musical with an all-female creative team.  With songs written by Grammy nominee Sara Bareilles, it is inspired by Adrienne Shelley’s film of the same name. It will be in Little Rock from February 21 to 23 of 2020.

The Play that Goes Wrong lives up to its title. It concerns a troupe of actors performing a murder mystery where everything that could go wrong does. Repeatedly. It is a long-running hit in both London and New York.  It will be in Little Rock on March 28 and 29 of 2020.

Finally, the Memory will Live Again as Cats returns to Little Rock. It has been several years since this Andrew Lloyd Webber-T.S. Eliot musical has been at Robinson Center. It will be there from June 5 to 7 of 2020.

The Yarn presents True Stories of Resilience from Our House

Our House has the great honor of hearing, seeing, and experiencing the inspiring stories of thousands of people each year who are working hard to make a better life for themselves.

On Thursday, March 14, at 7pm, The Yarn is hosting an event to provide opportunities to hear some of these stories—
-stories of perseverance, resilience, & transformation
-stories told with great power and great heart
-stories told by people who have something to say.

It will be at Cranford Co. located on the Main Street Creative Corridor, 512 Main Street.

Ten Minute Play Showcase today

ACANSA is proud to announce the second-annual Ten-Minute Play Showcase, a celebration of new work written, directed and enacted by local artists. The festival will be co-produced and directed by Hilary Trudell, founder of The Yarn and the Director of Local Programming at the Clinton School of Public Service.

Performances are at 3pm and 7pm in the Arkansas Repertory Theatre Annex.  Tickets are $10 and can be purchased here.

DETROIT ’67 is next play for UA Little Rock Theatre and Dance Department

Photo by Benjamin Krain.The University of Arkansas at Little Rock Department of Theatre Arts and Dance will present a production of “Detroit ’67” Feb. 27 to March 3. The play is winner of the Edward M. Kennedy Prize for Drama Inspired by American History

“Detroit ‘67” is a powerful play, written by Dominique Morisseau, that unfolds an explosive moment in American history – the race riots that ravaged the city of Detroit in 1967, all set to a vibrant soundtrack of the day’s Motown music.

In 1967 Detroit, Motown music is getting the party started, and Chelle and her brother Lank are making ends meet by turning their basement into an after-hours joint. But when a mysterious woman finds her way into their lives, the siblings clash over much more than the family business. As their pent-up feelings erupt, so does their city, and they find themselves caught in the middle of the ’67 riots.

Lawrence Smith, assistant professor of theatre history, directs the play featuring Taylor Green, Char Kendall Dupins, Tre’ Vaughn Whitley, Keith Harper, and Abby Jo Windsor. Additional crew members include Stage Manager Crystal Briner, Scenic and Lighting Director William Marshall, and Costume Designer Yslan Hicks.

The play will be held in the Haislip Theatre in the UA Little Rock Center for Performing Arts on the following days and times:

  •      Wednesday, Feb. 27: 7:30 p.m.
  •      Thursday, Feb. 28: 7:30 p.m.
  •      Friday, March 1: 7:30 p.m.
  •      Saturday, March 2: 7:30 p.m.
  •      Sunday, March 3: 2:30 p.m.

General admission tickets are $10 each, while tickets for UA Little Rock employees, students, seniors, and members of the military are $5. Tickets can be purchased online.
