Monty Python and the Holy Grail tonight at the Ron Robinson Theater

rrt monty_python_and_the_holy_grailThe Knights who say “Ni” will ride their fake horses onto the screen at the Ron Robinson Theater tonight.  At 7:30, the theatre will show Monty Python and the Holy Grail in honor of the film’s 40th anniversary.

Among the cast of characters are King Arthur, various Knights of the Roundtable, the Lady of the Lake, the Black Knight, killer rabbits and people who are not-yet-dead.  Directed by Terry Gilliam and Terry Jones, it was written by and stars John Cleese, Eric Idle, Graham Chapman, Michael Palin as well as Gilliam and Jones. Others in the cast include Carol Cleveland, Connie Booth and John Young.

Using the Arthurian legend as a framework, it manages to satirize and skewer many other social conventions with a very anachronistic tone.  The film was adapted for the musical theatre stage in 2005 as Spamalot which won the Tony Award for Best Musical.

The screening starts tonight at 10:00pm.  Cost for admission is $5.  Concessions are available for purchase.

Monty Python, Rocky Horror and a Harry Potter Marathon highlight summer films at Ron Robinson Theater

cals ronrob intThe Central Arkansas Library System’s (CALS) Ron Robinson Theater is making use of it’s state-of-the-art technology in a space that produces the feeling of an old-time grand movie theater. The movies and special events scheduled in the upcoming months celebrate everything from kid flicks, great directors, and classic movies to independent and documentary films. We’ll celebrate holidays with paranormal theater and seasonal films and rewind back to special anniversaries.

Special events include the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the films Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Rocky Horror Picture Show. A Harry Potter marathon will celebrate Harry Potter’s July 31 birthday by showing all eight movies in seven days, and special Harry Potter-themed concessions.

Tickets are $5 each, with the exception of the Harry Potter marathon.  Potter marathon tickets are $7 each or a pass for all eight movies for $40. Concessions will be available for purchase at every showing. Beer and wine are available at screenings scheduled after 5 p.m.

Three times the films at Ron Robinson Theatre today

Today at 2pm, 7pm and 10pm – the Ron Robinson Theater will be showing films from three film series.

The scientist father of a teenage girl and boy accidentally shrinks his and two other neighborhood teens to the size of insects. Now the teens must fight diminutive dangers as the father searches for them.

Arkansas Author Round Up at Hillary Rodham Clinton Children’s Library & Learning Center

READThe Central Arkansas Library System’s (CALS) Hillary Rodham Clinton Children’s Library & Learning Center, 4800 W. 10th Street, will hold an Arkansas Author Round Up on today, beginning at 10 a.m.
Five Arkansas children’s book authors will give attendees an opportunity to listen and interact with them about their children’s books.  The Arkansas Author Round Up is free and open to the public.

Authors participating in the Arkansas Author Round Up include: Carol Dabney, Bows and Butterflies; Sharrol Frederick, Pickles Play Baseball; Misti Kenison, The Tiny Travelers Series: Egypt and France; Erica Taylor, Figler, My Imaginary Friend; and Ebony White, Mr. Colors Saves the Day.

CALS’ Hillary Rodham Clinton Children’s Library & Learning Center is one of fourteen CALS branches serving Pulaski and Perry counties.  The Children’s Library is open Monday-Thursday from 10 a.m.-7 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m., and Sunday from 1 p.m.-5 p.m.  For more information, call 978-3870 or visit www.cals.org.

 

CALS-Con 2015 today

cals_conFans of superheroes, Game of Thrones, Doctor Who, Harry Potter, comics, and gaming will converge on the Central Arkansas Library System’s (CALS) 2nd Annual CALS Con on Saturday, May 30, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m on the Main Library campus, 100 Rock Street. All CALS Con events are free and open to the public.

CALS Con is a family-friendly celebration of all things fandom. The event kicks off the library’s 2015 superhero-themed Summer Reading Club, Every Hero Has a Story. Fans of all ages may come dressed as their favorite character. The day will include six panels, a social media scavenger hunt, table top gaming, LEGO display and open building, drop-in gaming area, and a meet up area. The first 700 people to register for the event will receive a special CALS Con swag bag.

CALS Con will conclude with a cosplay contest at the CALS Ron Robinson Theater, 100 River Market Avenue. Attendees are encouraged to post about their CALS Con experience on social media using #CALScon2015.

Bueller? Bueller? Bueller? tonight at Ron Robinson Theater

ferrisbFerris Bueller may have taken the day off, but his shenanigans are on the screen tonight at the Ron Robinson Theater.

Matthew Broderick, Alan Ruck and Mia Sara star in this ultimate movie about skipping school.  Jeffery Jones plays Broderick’s nemesis Dean Edward Rooney with Jennifer Grey playing his other nemesis, Jeanie Bueller. Cindy Pickett and Lyman Ward (who fell in love while filming the movie and are now married) play the Bueller parents while Edie McClurg, Charlie Sheen, Virginia Capers and Kristie Swanson make cameos.  Former Nixon speechwriter Ben Stein steals his scenes as the droning social studies teacher discussing the Laffer Curve and Voodoo Economics.

The sights and sounds of Chicago are showcased in this John Hughes masterpiece from 1986.

The movie starts at 7pm tonight. Admission is $5. Concessions are available for purchase as well.

Legacies & Lunch – Chris Engholm discusses White River Memoirs today at noon

white_riverThe White River and its tributaries represent the most ecologically intact watershed in the continental United States. Over a million people inhabit it, living in 234 communities in 60 counties. For the past two years, Chris Engholm has traveled the White River in a cedar strip canoe, listening to people connected to it and collecting the artwork of 25 fine artists who maintain a special relationship with the river.

This artwork is showcased in a gallery exhibition, White River Memoirs, on view in Butler Center Galleries, 401 Pres. Clinton Ave., now through July 25, 2015. At Legacies & Lunch, Engholm will discuss his experiences and present visual documentation of his findings.

The program takes place today at noon at the Darragh Center on the Main Library campus.
