8th Ever Nog-Off at HAM

In conjunction with the 2nd Friday Art Night, Historic Arkansas Museum presents its 8th Ever Nog-Off tonight.  It takes place from 5pm to 8pm at HAM and is free.

What started as a friendly competitive conversation between members of two of Little Rock’s oldest families about Egg Nog recipies has turned into an annual holiday celebration.

Historic Arkansas Museum’s 8th Ever Nog-off is a culinary celebration of this favorite holiday drink, and friendly competition for the best eggnog in town. From a 185-year-old recipe handed down 7 generations to concoctions with a modern twist, the only way to determine a winner is for guests to sample them all.

Two awards are given with the prize being bragging rights. The People’s Choice goes to the eggnog that receives the most votes from the Nog-off’s discerning guests who have chosen winners astutely for the past seven years. The Taster’s Choice goes to the nog that gets the nod from celebrity tasters.

The Competitors: Capital Hotel, Copper Grill, Bridget Farris, Loblolly Creamery, Drue Patton and Museum Director Bill Worthen

After sipping Egg Nog, participants can visit any of the numerous other sites of this month’s 2nd Friday Art Night throughout downtown.

A Capital Christmas: Capital Hotel Tree Lighting Tonight

The Capital Hotel is wrapped up in the Christmas spirit. The 2012 edition of A Capital Christmas actually kicked off yesterday with Ballet Arkansas’ Nutcracker Tea. But at the Capital this evening, the hotel lobby’s famous Christmas tree will be lit in a Christmas celebration.

Tonight’s festivities kick off at 5pm. In addition to the tree lighting, Chef Tandra’s gingerbread village will be unveiled. The front windows of the hotel have been wrapped for over a week as the village has been built in an enclosed section of the lobby.

Throughout December there will be many other events at the Capital Hotel. This Saturday (December 8) Ashley’s will host a Teddy Bear Tea. Pre-paid reservations are required for this event which is sure to sell out. Contact 501.370.7015 or lingold@capitalhotel.com.

Claude Bolling’s Suite for Violin and Jazz Piano Trio at The Afterthought

Tonight, October 8th, 2012 there will be a special one-time performance of Claude Bolling’s Suite for Violin and Jazz Piano Trio at The Afterthought, the jazz club on Kavanaugh Blvd. in the Hillcrest section of Little Rock.

With music starting at 8pm, saxophonist Brandon Dorris will perform a trio set with bassist Joe Vick and drummer Brian Brown. The Bolling,which is about an hour of music, will feature violinist Geoffrey Robson,pianist Louis Menendez, bassist Joe Vick, and drummer Brian Brown.

The evening will conclude with more music from Brandon Dorris and the trio.

Sophisticated jazz piano stylings blend seamlessly with lyrical and virtuosic violin playing in the music of Claude Bolling. $5 cover only.

Geoffrey Robson, violinist, is the Associate Conductor of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra and violinist in Trio Arkansas with pianist Louis Menendez. Louis Menendez, of Hot Springs, AR, is a fine concert pianist, opera coach, and conductor, and is a faculty member at
Ouachita Baptist University. Joe Vick is a member of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra and a Little Rock jazz mainstay. He also teaches music at College Station Elementary and Fuller Middle School in Little Rock.

Brian Brown, also a local jazz mainstay, has performed on just about every stage in town, and appears four nights a week at the Capital Hotel with the Ted Ludwig Jazz Trio. Brandon Dorris is one of the more versatile musicians in town. Recent appearances include the Hot Springs Jazz Festival, the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, Arkansas Repertory Theater, and Dugan’s Pub.

Architeaser – June 29

Yesterday’s Architeaser was the awning and balcony of the Capital Hotel. Though not unique at the time it was constructed, it is now one of only two balconies which extend out over the sidewalk in Little Rock. When the building was constructed there was no balcony; it was added, however, during the early years as the building was modified and expanded.

Yesterday’s Architeaser featured some gilded flowers in the lobby of the Capital Hotel.  This afternoon visitors can view these flowers while listening to the Quapaw Quartet of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra. The concert will start at 5pm.

Today’s Architeaser is another band of flowers.  These surround a doorway downtown.

 

Quapaw Quartet at Capital Hotel

The Quapaw Quartet of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra will perform a free concert at the Capital Hotel this afternoon from 5 pm to 6:30 pm.

Come listen to a selection of short, accessible pieces along with commentary from the musicians.

Guests are invited to mingle with the musicians and Music Director Philip Mann before and after the performance.

Yesterday’s Architeaser was a gas lamp on the Capital Hotel property. Though there are still a few gaslights still in use, they are certainly rarer than they once were.
