Arkansas Chamber Singers Holiday Concert this weekend at Old State House Museum

IMG_9317[1]The Old State House Museum with support from the Arkansas Arts Council welcomes the Arkansas Chamber Singers performing their annual holiday concert.

The annual “Christmas at the Old State House,” will feature traditional music of the season, music of new composers and music popular during the American Civil War (marking the 150th anniversary of the final Christmastime during the Civil War).

The combination of the acoustical magic of the hall and the glorious voices of the Arkansas Chamber Singers promises to pack the house for all three thrilling performances!

Performances are at 7pm on Friday, December 12 and Saturday, December 13.  On Sunday, December 14, the concert will be at 3pm.

Admission is free, but seating may be limited, so reserve your seats now by going to the Arkansas Chamber Singers website.

10th Ever Nog-Off at Historic Arkansas Museum tonight

Tonight from 5pm to 8pm Historic Arkansas Museum will host the 10th Ever Nog-off.  And it’s free!

Get in the holiday spirit with some holiday spirits at this celebration of a favorite holiday drink. Sample a variety of nogs and vote for your favorite at this friendly competition for the best nog in town.
Noggers include Cache Restaurant, Capital Bar and Grill, Copper Grill, the Empress of Little Rock, Loblolly Creamery, Bridget Fennel Farris, John Selig and Family, and Stone’s Throw Brewery.
Also Nogging will be Bill Worthen and his daughter Rachel Worthen who are the sixth and seventh generations to make Nicholas Peay’s egg nog.  Peay was a founder of Little Rock, served as acting Mayor and was father of Mayor Gordon N. Peay (whose birthday is today.)
The judges will be Mayor Mark Stodola; attorney and cocktail expert Joel DiPippa; and Emily Van Zandt, food and drink editor of Arkansas Life.

Your chance to see Art created by LR Zoo animals tonight

The animals of the Little Rock Zoo have been artistic of late.  Tonight from 6pm to 9pm, the public will have a chance to see this handiwork and perhaps purchase it.

The event will be at the Boswell Mourot Fine Art gallery at 5815 Kavanaugh Blvd.

The public is invited for a viewing and silent auction of art work created by Little Rock’s very own Zoo animals at the Little Rock Zoo! Along with the silent auction there will be ornaments and wine glasses for sale that are also decorated by the animals! Light snacks and refreshments will be served.

Admission to this event is free.

Red Octopus Theater annual Pagans on Bobsled! continues through this weekend

Pagans On Bobsleds!,an all original sketch comedy show by Red Octopus Theater, runs December 10th, 11th, 12th, and 13th at The PUBLIC Theatre, located at 616 Center Street, in downtown Little Rock, AR.  Doors will open at 7:30PM and the show will start at 8:00PM.  Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for senior citizens, military and students.  No reservations are accepted and there will be refreshments available.  The show is recommended for mature audiences.

Pagans On Bobsleds!, was Red Octopus’ first full length original sketch comedy show back in 1992. They are proud to present the 23rd annual installment of their Christmas Holiday Extravaganza.  Not unlike the troupe that performs, there will be plenty of misfit toys, skewered representations of the season and a plethora of ethnic and political views of the holidays.  There will also be themes of family togetherness, family dysfunction, drunken elves and ‘How to deal with Muzak at the mall’, as well as many depictions of Father Christmas and seasonal choral styling.
So come to The PUBLIC Theatre to relieve your holiday stress with Red Octopus Theater and you may very well get your stocking stuffed.
The cast features Sandy Baskin, Alli Clark, Michael Goodbar, Evan Tanner, David Weatherly and Jason Willey.

FESTIVUS 2014 tonight with the QQA

qqa FestivusThere may not be feats of strength or airing of grievances, but that doesn’t mean QQA won’t be celebrating Festivus!

Festivus is a festival for the best of us.

Festivus attendees will not be required to perform feats of strength, air grievances or decorate the pole.  All they will be required to do is have a fun time and enjoy the opportunity to bid on great auction items.

There is much for QQA to celebrate this year. The most recent achievement is the acquisition of the 1853 William E. Woodruff House. This will allow the structure to be stabilized while plans for its future are decided.

When: Tuesday, December 9 6:00-9:00 p.m.

Where: Albert Pike Memorial Temple, 712 Scott Street.

Tickets are $50 at the door.  QQA memberships are also available at the door.  The price includes food and open bar.

Proceeds benefit the preservation programs of the Quapaw Quarter Association.

Holiday Open House and Sweet Potato Pie Baking Contest today at Mosaic Templars Cultural Center

mtcc-say_it_aint_saysThe Mosaic Templars Cultural Center will host its annual Holiday Open House this afternoon from 2pm to 5pm.  

One of the features is the “Say It Ain’t Say’s” Sweet Potato Pie Baking Contest.  The Holiday Open House is a festive and fun opportunity to enjoy a day full of holiday cheer. We will have a wide variety of entertainment and this year’s event will feature our 3rd annual “Say It Ain’t Say’s” sweet potato pie contest, in honor of Little Rock’s black Santa, Robert “Say” McIntosh. Bring the kids to check out an awesome variety of holiday craft stations. Free and open to the public.

Two of the MTCC sister museums will also have holiday events this afternoon.  The Old State House Museum and the Historic Arkansas Museum will also be hosting holiday open houses.  All three museums are programs of the Department of Arkansas Heritage.

The 47th Annual Christmas Frolic & Open House today at Historic Arkansas Museum

hamfrolic2014This marks the 47th year that Historic Arkansas Museum has hosted an annual Christmas Open House.  For many families, attending this event on the first Sunday afternoon in December is a multi-generational family tradition.
This event celebrates Christmas as it was in the 1800s with living history, carols, reenactments, live music, dancing and more. Visitors come from across the state every year for our famous hot cider and ginger cake, as well as Arkansas Made holiday shopping in the Museum Store.
Among the activities will be blacksmithing demonstrations, the Arkansas Country Dance Band, Lark in the Morning, Sugar on the Floor, fiddler Ricky Russell and friends, Carolers in the Kitchen and the Aeolus Recorder Konsort.
Admission is free. The event runs from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
Two of HAM’s sister museums will also be hosting holiday events today.  The Old State House Museum and Mosaic Templars Cultural Center both have Holiday Open Houses this afternoon.  All three museums are agencies of the Department of Arkansas Heritage.
