Beethoven & Blue Jeans Week continues with 4th Annual Beer & Brats Street Party tonight

Beethoven Blue JeansTonight from 5:30pm to 7pm, the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra will be hosting its 4th annual Beer & Brats Street Party.  This year it will be at 500 Main Street in front of the site which will soon be home to the ASO offices and rehearsal space.  Enjoy free brats, Diamond Bear beer, and the sounds of the Episcopal Collegiate School Steel Drum Band. The event is free to ticket holders of this weekend’s upcoming Beethoven & Blue Jeans concert. Tickets for the event can also be purchased for $19.

Support the Arkansas Food Bank! – Bring a turkey (or other bird!) to the Street Party or to the Beethoven & Blue Jeans concerts to support the Arkansas Foodbank. The ASO will give each bird donor a pair of free tickets to a future ASO concert!

This year marks the fourth year that Diamond Bear beer has supplied the local beer for the ASO Beer and Brats Street Party.

An addition this year is Beethoven Yoga on Thursday evening.  Barefoot Studio on Old Cantrell for Beethoven Yoga! Barefoot offers classes for all levels, and yogis attending Beethoven Yoga may win Beethoven & Blue Jeans t-shirts or free tickets to an upcoming ASO performance!

Little Rock Horror Picture Show – March 20-23

logoThe third annual Little Rock Horror Picture Show will be March 20-23. This year the festival is teaming up with the Arkansas Food Bank to “Take a Bite out of Hunger” because going hungry is a scary thing for too many families and children in the state of Arkansas. If you bring three or more non-perishable food items when you purchase tickets to LRHPS you’ll get $5 off the price of one full pass or $3 off the price of one day pass.

Opening Night
Opening Night festivities include a special guests Brooke Butler and Tom Williamson, the stars of All Cheerleaders Die! The two will be on hand to take part in a special Q&A with festival goers following the film.

Following the film there will be a party in true LRFF Fashion at WT Bubba’s featuring music from Bonnie Montgomery and Nathan Howdeshell!

Made in Arkansas
The Made in Arkansas line up is pretty big this year. Not only are is the LRHPS showing a feature made in Arkansas, the festival is also showing the horror/sci-fi films from last year’s 48 Hour Film Project along with a wonderful line up of horror shorts from all over Arkansas.

This year the festival is showing the premiere of Steal Kill Destroy from Carson and Garrison Martin and starring Gunnar Fritz Stansson. A story about a petty thief who leads two gullible documentarians down a path of theft, debauchery, and murder.

Beethoven, Blue Jeans, Beer, Brats all with the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra this weekend

mw3_largeThis weekend: Maestro Philip Mann and the ASO are joined by talented cellist Inbal Segev for the ASO’s most popular Masterworks concert, featuring Strauss’s Die Fledermaus: Overture, Gulda’s rollicking Cello Concerto, and, of course, the mighty Beethoven with his Symphony No. 4. Wear jeans to this casual concert and be sure to come early for the 3rd Annual Beer and Brats Street Party!

Beethoven and Blue Jeans presents a thoroughly Viennese affair with sounds of court, nature, and even the city’s downtown clubs. Opening the performance in quintessential fashion is Johann Strauss’s Overture to Die Fledermaus, which is infused with the excitement of nighttime Vienna and its grand waltzes and intoxicating flair. A personal favorite, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4 is one of the most perfect works of the classical Viennese symphony genre. His brilliance and wit is particularly sharp is one of his finest and most joyful works, whose only shortcoming is that it was a middle child -falling between Eroica and the mighty 5th Symphony.

Outrageous personality Friedrich Gulda crossed genres between jazz and classical as a pianist, but as a composer he left all labels behind. His Concerto for Cello and Wind Orchestra is an altogether Viennese work citing everything from Haydn to rock and roll as inspiration. It could easily have been kitsch, but Gulda’s genius engenders a work of style, fun, and panache. Bringing the unforgettable concerto to the Robinson stage is critically acclaimed cellist, Inbal Segev, making her ASO debut.

This casual concert kicks off with the Beer & Brats Street Party at 6 pm on Saturday and 1 pm on Sunday. Concert ticket holders can enjoy free brats, $2 Diamond Bear beer, the sounds of the Episcopal Collegiate School Steel Drum Band, and maybe a few surprises! Concert goers can follow @ARsymphony and the hashtag #BeethovenAndBlueJeans via Twitter to get the inside scoop about the Street Party and to learn insights about the concert in progress.

Arts & Humanities Month: Big Boo!-seum Bash

For the 16th year, a number of Little Rock museums have joined together to present the Big Boo!-seum Bash.  The 2011 edition takes place tonight. This annual, free event is hosted by members of the Greater Little Rock Museum Consortium and sponsored by the Little Rock Convention and Visitors Bureau. The hours are from 6pm to 8:30pm.

Big Boo!-seum Bash is one giant story-telling, trick-or-treating, fun and games evening that is safe and accessible for children and their families.

This year’s locations are the Historic Arkansas Museum, Heifer Village, Central High School National Historic Site, Old State House Museum, EMOBA, Clinton Presidential Center, MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History and Mosaic Templars Cultural Center.

Visitors can drive to each location, where free parking is available. Game cards will also be issued at each site. Visit five of the eight participating locations to qualify for a prize drawing collected from the participating museums or visit seven of the eight participating locations to qualify for the grand prize drawing.

Visitors are encouraged to support the Arkansas Foodbank by brining non-perishable food items to enter for a chance to win prizes.
