Riverfest 2013 Lineup Announced

Verizon will again serve as the presenting sponsor for Riverfest 2013 – Arkansas’s largest and most popular music, arts and food festival.

The following musical headliners will perform at the main stages:
Bud Light Stage: Friday – Daughtry; Saturday – Sugar Ray, Blackstone Cherry, Bush; Sunday – Cody Belew, Florida Georgia Line, Dierks Bentley.
Miller Lite/Arkansas Federal Credit Union Stage: Friday – Rodney Atkins, Jana Kramer, Darius Rucker; Saturday – Lupe Fiasco, Kelly Rowland; Sunday – Drive By Truckers, Peter Frampton

The festival is scheduled for Memorial Day weekend, May 24-26, and will feature music and activities in Julius Breckling Riverfront Park, Clinton Center Park, Heifer International Campus and the vibrant River Market District in downtown Little Rock. Children 6 and younger are free. Local and regional entertainers will be announced over the next weeks.

Advance tickets go on sale Monday, April 1, at Walgreens stores throughout Arkansas. These tickets are $17.50 for three days’ admission – half the cost of the $35 gate admission.

The advance ticket will be exchanged at any festival gateway for an IBERIABANK wristband that can be used for admission into all three days of food, fun and entertainment along the Arkansas River.

Quantities are limited for half-price tickets, so the public is encouraged to act fast. Visit www.riverfestarkansas.com for a list of store locations selling tickets.

Ark Literary Fest Preview Event: Three on Three

three on threeThree on Three, Arkansas Literary Festival’s fast-paced sneak peek at a trio of authors on the 2013 Festival roster, tips off at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 7, in the Main Library’s Darragh Center.

Arkansas authors Kevin Brockmeier (The Illumination), Nickole Brown (Sister), and Festival Chair Jay Jennings (Escape Velocity: A Charles Portis Miscellany), offer insight into the work of authors Ben Fountain, Frank X. Walker, and Karen Russell.

If you like pro football, poetry, or the supernatural, or if you’re interested in social justice, the Iraq War, or alligators in the Everglades, Three on Three has you covered.

Fountain, Walker, and Russell will appear at the 2013 Festival, April 18-21, along with additional best-selling and emerging authors from across the country.

The tenth annual Arkansas Literary Festival, the premier gathering of readers and writers in Arkansas, will include more than 80 presenters in locations on both sides of the river from April 18-21, 2013. The Central Arkansas Library System’s Main Library campus and other venues in the River Market and Argenta Arts districts are the sites for a stimulating mix of sessions, panels, special events, performances, workshops, presentations, opportunities to meet authors, book sales, and book signings. Most events are free and open to the public.

New Year’s Eve Production at ARVEST on Ice in the River Market

The Grand Jete Dance Troupe is made up of children 10-16 years of age from Moscow, Russia. They are known as one of the best youth dance groups in the region and have toured the United States and Europe under the direction of Ekaterina Anseeva and Tatyana Duginova.

The troupe has prepared a special performance for Central Arkansas during the 2012 holiday season! Performances are FREE, but donations are encouraged and will go to support the initiatives of Peacework and partnering orphanages in Moscow. Previous tours have included the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall in Moscow, Russia; Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida; and various venues in Dallas, Texas.

About Peacework in Russia
Peacework is a nonprofit global service organization that has worked with children’s homes in Russia since 1991, from Blagoveschensk in the far east, to Ulyanovsk, Ekaterinburg, St. Petersburg, Pavlovsk, and Moscow in the west. Peacework works alongside its Russian community partners to improve the living conditions for the children, provide educational and inspirational programs, and offer support for the rocky and difficult transition from the only home they’ve often known as a child into Russian society.

The children and youth in the Grand Jete Dance Troup work with the youth at Orphanages #51, #105, and others in surrounding Russian villages of Noginsk, Istra, and Serviev Posad, sharing their dancing talent and helping to smooth the challenges of growing up in Moscow and its surroundings.

Bass next CEO of Museum of Discovery

The Museum of Discovery today announced that Kelley Bass will become the next CEO of the Museum.  He will succeed Nan Selz who retires at the end of this year.

Bass, who is currently Assistant Dean for External Affairs at the UALR’s Donaghey College of Engineering and Information Technology. Prior to that he worked at Acxiom, Arkansas Business Publishing Group and newspapers in Arkansas and Missouri.

He has been a member of the Museum’s Board of Directors for the past three years as the facility has undergone an extension renvoation and reinvigoration under Selz’s leadership.  He has also been active in Riverfest and other downtown activities.

The Museum of Discovery was founded in 1927 and is Little Rock’s oldest museum.
The museum was originally accredited by the American Association of Museums in 1993 and was re-accredited in 2001. During the period between its founding and its accreditation, the museum actively collected approximately 14,000 cultural and historical artifacts and numerous species of live animals and insects.

Selz and Bass

In 1998, the museum moved to the River Market and in 2003 became a Smithsonian Affiliate.  In 2011, the museum closed for nine months in order to add a new entrance and undergo a total renovation. This project, funded by a grant from the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation, also provided funding for new, interactive science exhibits, completing the museum’s transformation from a collecting museum to a science center.

Sculpture at the River Market Show and Sale this weekend

Hundreds of sculptures and thousands of visitors will again populate the River Market Pavilions when 2012 Sculpture at the River Market returns for the sixth year on October 19 – 21.

The sculptures will be on display in the River Market Pavilions and in the adjacent area of Riverfront Park. The works featured will include all types of media, style, subject matter, and size.

Admission to Sculpture at the River Market is free. Sculpture at the River Market Market will run from 9AM to 5PM on Saturday, October 19 and from 10AM to 4PM on Sunday, October 21.

On Saturday, Sculpture at the River Market will take place in conjunction with the Farmers’ Market.

At 2pm today, there will be a dedication of a new piece of public art.  A one of kind 15 foot sculpture constructed of stainless steel, glass and bronze was the winner of the 2011 Sculpture at the River Market people’s choice award. “The Center” by artist Chapel received the most votes.

This evening there will be a preview party where patrons will get the first chance to see the artwork, visit with the sculptors, and purchase sculptures. Tickets for the preview party are $100.

The sale and show is sponsored by the City of Little Rock and the National Sculptors’ Guild. Proceeds from the sale of artwork will fund upgrades in Riverfront Park and the River Market.

Among the artists are Arkansans Terry and Maritza Cornejo Bean, Shelley Buonaiuto, Bryan Massey Sr., Ed Pennebaker, Ryan T. Schmidt, John Sewell, Margaret Warren and Michael Warrick.

Movies in the Park: ANNIE

“Let’s Go to the Movies” is a song from the family film Annie which will close out the 2012 Movies in the Park season.

Albert Finney, Carol Burnett, Bernadette Peters, Ann Reinking, Tim Curry, Edward Herrmann and Geoffrey Holder star in this adaptation of the Broadway show. Newcomer Aileen Quinn stars in the title role.  John Huston directed the 1982 film which featured several songs written especially for the movie — but did not drop the anthem “Tomorrow.”

Movies in the Park is a free outdoor movie series in Little Rock’s River Market. The mission of Movies in the Park is help foster a sense of community and enjoyment in downtown Little Rock and throughout Central Arkansas by bringing people together to enjoy a movie in a unique setting along the scenic banks of the Arkansas River.

Movies start at dark.You’re welcome to bring picnics but please no glass containers and pick up afterwards. If you choose not to bring your own picnic we do have concessions available for sale. Bring your bug spray, picnic and family and have a good time!

The park opens at 6:30 pm.

The Little Rock Convention and Visitors Bureau Technical Services department provides all the equipment for the movies.

Movies in the Park tonight: CADDYSHACK

A sure sign of summer — duffers with their mashies and niblicks — in other words GOLF.  The quintessential golf movie Caddyshack is on tap tonight at Movies in the Park.

Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, Rodney Dangerfield and Ted Knight star in this 1980 movie. (The movie is as funny today as it was 32 years ago.)  The cast also includes Michael O’Keefe, Brian Doyle-Murray, Sarah Holcomb, Scott Colomby, Cindy Morgan and everyone’s favorite motorized gopher.  Harold Ramis directed this romp around the golf course.
