Spike Lee Celebration at CALS Ron Robinson Theater – Part 2: The Rodney Block Collective

The Central Arkansas Library System is celebrating the works of Spike Lee in the CALS Ron Robinson Theater and you’re invited!

Join us on Saturday July 13 as we host The Rodney Block Collective for a performance featuring the music from all of Spike Lee’s films.

Rodney Block is a Dumas native who has been thriving in the local music scene for the past several years.  He is much sought after to appear at special events and parties. He is also a fixture on the live music scene at many venues around Little Rock.

Tickets for The Rodney Block Collective concert are $15 for general admission seating. The doors open at 7:00 pm and the concert starts at 8:00 pm.

36th Pops on the River, presented by the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

Pops on the River, presented by the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, will take place Thursday., July 4, in downtown Little Rock.

In its 36th year, this free community event is the largest Fourth of July event in the state as more than 30,000 are drawn downtown to the events surrounding Pops on the River.

Pops has continued to grow these last three decades in no small part because it has held true to its roots and continues to focus on a family-friendly environment complete with fantastic food, fireworks, and music by the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra. It is a heralded community event that many remember for years to come.

Pops on the River will begin at 3pm in the River Market area of downtown Little Rock with free activities for kids in the Kid’s Pavilion, a marketplace for shopping, food trucks and entertainment for all ages.

Entertainment inside the First Security Amphitheater will include live music by Nicky Parrish, Rodney Block and the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra. Fireworks will begin at approximately 9:30 p.m. and are shot off the Main Street Bridge.

The event is free to the public and a portion of proceeds benefit a local charity. This year’s benefiting charity is Rock City Rescue. Pops on the River is also sponsored in part by the Orion Federal Credit Union, Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, Little Rock Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, 106.7 The Ride and Waste Management.

This show with the Rodney Block Collective featuring Bijoux and special guest artists will begin at 10 pm.

In honor of her April birthday, Amy Kelley Bell is curating April Sessions by choosing her favorite local musicians to cover her favorite artists. For the final Wednesday in April, Amy has invited Rodney Block to cover Quincy Jones.

Block released his smooth jazz album, STEEL, in October 2012 and his hip hop collaboration  record, THE LAST ACTION HEROES in 2014. A trumpeter who has been featured and performed in various venues across the globe ranging from corporate to social, he has built a niche in the genres of jazz and hip hop.

Notable artists he has shared the stage with include Earth, Wind, and Fire, Joe, Whoodini, Conya Doss, Johnny Gill, Dwele, Jonathan Butler, Dave Hollister, Ellis and Delfayo Marsalis, Kirk Whalum, Layla Hathaway, Eric Roberson, Anthony David, Marsha Ambrosius and The Yellowjackets.

Block, Beer & Bourbon 2019 – supporting KUAR and KLRE

Image may contain: textThe Friends of KLRE/KUAR are hosting Block, Beer & Bourbon, tonight (Saturday, January 12th), at the Albert Pike Masonic Center, 712 Scott Street in Little Rock.  The event starts at 7pm.

Guests will enjoy tastings of carefully selected beers and bourbons from O’Looney’s Wine and Liquor, cocktail buffet from the Pantry, and fabulous tunes from the Rodney Block Collective.

Creative Class of 2015: Bijoux

BijouxBijoux is a sultry, soul singer adept in various styles.  The daughter of West African parents, she  grew up in a household exposed to differing genres of music including folk, classic rock and roll, makosa, country, and R&B.  As a child she grew up singing in talent shows she produced, as well as church and school choirs.

After years of high school and collegiate choral experience (madrigals, sacred African-American chamber, etc.), she discovered a love for jazz .  In 2009, she emerged onto the scene again as a featured artist with groups like Rodney Block & The Real Music Lovers and Onyx The Band.

Bijoux has opened for and sung with the likes of Kim Burrell, Anthony Hamilton, Dwele, Maurette Brown Clark, Sunday Best Season One Winner Crystal Aiken, Sunday Best Season Two Winner Y’Anna Crawley, DeWayne Woods, and Beverly Crawford.  I have been featured on several local projects for Rodney Block, Epiphany, Kwestion, and more. She frequently performs at various Little Rock music venues.
