The 10th annual Movies in the Park lineup was announced.

June 11: Man of Steel (PG-13)

June 18: Office Space (R)

June 25: Eat Pray Love (PG-13)

July 2: Frozen (PG)

July 9: Harry Potter & The Sorcerer’s Stone (PG)

July 16: The Hunger Games (PG-13)

July 23: Friday Night Lights (PG-13)

July 30: E.T. the Extra Terrestrial (PG)

Films start at sundown in Riverfront Park at. The First Security Amphitheater. The park opens an hour prior.

11th Arkansas Literary Festival ends today

AR Lit Fest 2014The 11th annual Arkansas Literary Festival ends today.

The final day starts at noon with the film Stay More, which explores the life and writings of Donald Harington. It takes place at the Arkansas Arts Center at noon. Filmmaker Brian Walter will discuss Harington in a conversation with Ed Gray. (The Arts Center’s restaurant Best Impressions is open at 11 for those wanting to eat before the film.)

At 1:30pm at the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center, there is a panel featuring Congressman John Lewis of Georgia, Andrew Aydin and Nate Powell. Moderated by Olly Neal, the panel will discuss March: Book One an illustrated first-hand account of Congressman Lewis’ role in the Civil Rights movement.

The finale, at 3pm, is Ellen Gilchrist discussing Acts of God.  Amy Bradley-Hole will be the moderator of this session, which will be in the Darragh Center on the Main Library campus.

2nd Friday Cinema at Old State House – Burt Reynolds in WHITE LIGHTNING

OSH White LightFor this month’s Second Friday Cinema, the Old State House Museum will present a screening of White Lightning. The screening begins at 5:30 pm.

Released in 1973, “White Lightning” stars Burt Reynolds as Bobby “Gator” McKlusky, a moonshiner serving time in an Arkansas prison. When his brother is murdered, Gator agrees to go undercover with the feds in order to expose a corrupt lawman.

Joining Reynolds in the cast are Jennifer Billingsly, Ned Beatty, Louise Latham, Diane Ladd, Bo Hopkins, Dabbs Greer and Matt Clark.  A six year old Laura Dern made her uncredited screen debut playing Ladd’s daughter. She got the job through nepotism since she really is Ladd’s daughter.

Ben Fry, General Manager of KLRE/KUAR and coordinator of the film minor at UALR, will introduce the film and lead a discussion after the screening.

MANDELA: LONG WALK TO FREEDOM at Ron Robinson Theater this weekend

Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom

When: Saturday, April 5, 7pm and April 6, 5pm

Where: CALS Ron Robinson Theater

Admission is $5 and concessions will be available for $1.

Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom is based on South African President Nelson Mandela‘s autobiography, which chronicles his early life, coming of age, education and 27 years in prison before becoming President and working to rebuild the country’s once segregated society.

It features the Oscar-nominated song “Ordinary Love” written and performed by U2.

ACANSA Arts Festival Receives $10,000 Planning & Implementation Grant

The newly founded ACANSA Arts Festival accepted a $10,000 check from the Central Arkansas Planning and Development District (CAPDD) on Monday, February 24th. The distribution comes from CAPDD’s General Improvement Fund and is awarded through a grant process to qualifying organizations for the planning and implementation of economic and community development projects. The ACANSA application had the endorsement of Arkansas State Representative Warwick Sabin.

The CAPDD award adds to growing level of interest and support for the new arts festival to be held over 5 days in September. “Cultural enrichment opportunities that bring people together in Little Rock and North Little Rock both address the “quality of life” issues our board endeavors to support and generate viable economic opportunities in our community over their duration,” remarked CAPDD Executive Director Rodney Larsen.

Warwick Sabin and Rodney Larsen presented the check to Charlotte Gadberry, founder of the ACANSA Arts Festival and ACANSA Executive Director Renay Dean.

ACANSA Arts Festival is a southern celebration of visual and performing arts, premiering its inaugural event September 24-28, 2014, in Central Arkansas.

Little Rock Horror Picture Show – March 20-23

logoThe third annual Little Rock Horror Picture Show will be March 20-23. This year the festival is teaming up with the Arkansas Food Bank to “Take a Bite out of Hunger” because going hungry is a scary thing for too many families and children in the state of Arkansas. If you bring three or more non-perishable food items when you purchase tickets to LRHPS you’ll get $5 off the price of one full pass or $3 off the price of one day pass.

Opening Night
Opening Night festivities include a special guests Brooke Butler and Tom Williamson, the stars of All Cheerleaders Die! The two will be on hand to take part in a special Q&A with festival goers following the film.

Following the film there will be a party in true LRFF Fashion at WT Bubba’s featuring music from Bonnie Montgomery and Nathan Howdeshell!

Made in Arkansas
The Made in Arkansas line up is pretty big this year. Not only are is the LRHPS showing a feature made in Arkansas, the festival is also showing the horror/sci-fi films from last year’s 48 Hour Film Project along with a wonderful line up of horror shorts from all over Arkansas.

This year the festival is showing the premiere of Steal Kill Destroy from Carson and Garrison Martin and starring Gunnar Fritz Stansson. A story about a petty thief who leads two gullible documentarians down a path of theft, debauchery, and murder.

Its a Bolly Holi Day at the Ron Robinson Theater with CALS and the LR Film Fest

LRFF CALS HoliHoli is a popular Hindu festival that celebrates the arrival of spring. The festival is traditionally celebrated by throwing vibrantly colored powder and water, playing music, dancing, and eating.

The Central Arkansas Library System and Little Rock Film Festival are celebrating by screening three Bollywood movies at the Ron Robinson Theater today.

12pm – Sholay

In a rural village, two bandits find romance and a hope for redemption as they seek to free the village from a vicious criminal and his minions.

3pm – Bhool Bhulaiya

When the ancestral palace of the Brahmin family becomes the site of some seriously unsettling events, it’s up to a psychiatrist from America to determine if the house is truly haunted in this comic thriller.

6pm – Om Shanti Om

Love and dreams follow two starry-eyed actors across three decades and two incarnations in this splashy Hindi musical.

Admission to the films is free.
