ACANSA Arts Festival of the South continues through this weekend. Among the offerings tonight is Jessica Sherr’s Bette Davis Ain’t for Sissies

Written by and starring Jessica Sherr, Bette Davis Ain’t for Sissies is an up close and personal “conversation” with the two-time Oscar-winning and ten-time Oscar-nominated actress, Bette Davis. This 90-minute one-woman show escorts audiences to the 1939 Academy Awards. Miss Davis, nominated for Best Actress in the film “Dark Victory,” is pitted against Vivien Leigh in “Gone with the Wind.” When The Los Angeles Times leaks the Oscar winners, what will the bold, defiant and disillusioned Bette Davis do next?

Tennessee Williams was always disappointed that “I’ve always depended on the kindness of strangers” did not elicit the audience laughter he wanted in his Pulitzer Prize winning A Streetcar Named Desire.

In partnership with Argenta Community Theater, the ACANSA Arts Festival of the South is proud to present Tennessee Williams’ timeless masterpiece, A Streetcar Named Desire. Seeking solace from her crumbling world, Blanche arrives at her sister, Stella’s, apartment bringing her face to face with the menacing masculinity of Stanley Kowalski. Directed by Clinton School student Ben Grimes, the production is a raw exploration of family, sexuality, gender roles, and survival.

A Community Conversation will be led by Dr. Virginia O. Craighill, Professor of English from the University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn.

The production opened on September 17 and runs through September 22.  Performances are at 7:30pm through Saturday with a 2:00 matinee on Sunday.

Tonight on CALS Ron Robinson Theater stage: Hot Club of Cowtown

CALS Arkansas Sounds presents Hot Club of Cowtown

Since 1998, the Western swing-gypsy-jazz trio Hot Club of Cowtown has traveled the world bringing their magical musical chemistry to audiences. Violinist Elana James, guitarist Whit Smith, and bassist Jake Erwin are equal partners in this original marriage of gypsy and jazz inspired by the music of Django Reinhardt—which accounts for the “Hot Club” portion of their name—with the hoedowns, traditional tunes, and Western swing–inspired music of Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys, represented in the “Cowtown” part of their name. This performance features a special musical tribute celebrating 50 years since the release of The Band‘s self-titled album, featuring Arkansas music legend Levon Helm!

Tickets are $25 for general admission seating. The doors open at 7:00 pm and the concert starts at 8:00 pm.

The ACANSA Arts Festival of the South kicks off three weeks of performing arts, visual arts exhibitions and presentations during a free Opening Reception. Inside CALS’ Roberts Library in downtown Little Rock’s River Market, the ACANSA Festival Opening Reception includes an exhibit featuring artists participating in the Little Rock Arts + Culture Commission’s Open Studios.

Just outdoors, Ballet Arkansas brings even more levity to the Festival’s launch with an innovative cross-pollination between visual and performance art. Art with a Twist explores the motion behind the creation of modern art when Ballet Arkansas dancers use their bodies to create four unique outdoor pieces of visual art.Image may contain: 1 person, dancing

Still time for artists to register for 2019 Open Studios Little Rock

The Little Rock Arts+Culture Commission is proud that Open Studios Little Rock is going to take place during 2019 ACANSA Arts Festival.  It will be on Saturday, September 14.

Open Studios Little Rock is an event that gives the public an opportunity to meet Little Rock artists, see the spaces where they work, and see their creative processes first-hand.

Open Studios LR is open to all artists – visual and performing – working with the Little Rock city limits. Open Studios LR gives artists the opportunity to develop face-to-face relationships with potential buyers, gain public recognition, and be represented by the City of Little Rock’s Arts and Culture Commission.

New this year:  because Open Studios Little Rock is partnering with ACANSA, participating artists will be given the opportunity to participate in the ACANSA Opening Night Party on Friday, September 13.  It will be in the CALS Bobby Roberts Library at Library Square in downtown Little Rock.  Each Open Studios Little Rock artist will be able to showcase one piece of art that evening.  Maps and information about Open Studios Little Rock will also be available.  In addition, this is a 2nd Friday Art Night, so the preview party/Open Studios showcase will be on the 2nd Friday Art Night route. 

The public can participate in FREE, self-guided tours of art-related studios, live-in/work studios and homes, galleries, schools, and other creative spaces

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 2019 – 10am until 4pm.

ALTERNATIVE SPACE
If you are unable to welcome the public into your studio, you may participate by showing your art at the alternative space, inside Cranford Co., 512 Main Street.

SALES
Sales are handled by each artist and we do not take a percentage. You may sell prints, other artistic projects and commission customized work for the future. It is suggested that you should be equipped to accept credit cards.
