Final Day of Riverfest: Fireworks, Fun, and Fantastic Music

banner-square-dayRiverfest concludes today with even more live music and fun.   A highlight of the evening will be the First Security Bank Fireworks display at approximately 9pm.

On the Bud Light Stage at the Clinton Presidential Center, the Saturday night acts are Cody Belew (6:30pm), Florida Georgia Line (7:45pm) and Dierks Bentley (at 9:45pm).

During the afternoon, the acts will be Big Shane Thornton (2pm), Trey Hawkins Band (3:30pm) and Matt Stell & Deep Roots (5pm).

The Miller Lite/Arkansas Federal Credit Union Stage evening acts will feature Drive-By Truckers (at 7:30pm) and Peter Frampton (at 9:30pm).

Earlier in the day, the stage will feature Swampbird (1:30pm), Stephen Neeper Band (3pm), Sonny Burgess & The Pacers (4:30pm) and Paul Thorn (6pm).

The Stickyz Music Stage at the Clinton Presidential Center will feature Toubab Krewe (at 7:45pm) and Richie Spice (at 9:45pm).  Earlier in the day, the stage will host Damn Arkansan (2pm), The Dangerous Idiots (at 3:15pm), Adam Faucett (at 4:30pm) and Tyrannosaurus Chicken (at 6pm).

Throughout the three days of the Festival, kids will enjoy Deltic Timber KidZone area of Riverfest 2013.  The ”KidZone Playtime Promenade” presented by Deltic Timber is located along the banks of the Arkansas River near the Peabody Playground & Water Park in the central area of Julius Breckling Riverfront Park. Kids will have a great time strolling along the Riverwalk Promenade, which will feature lots of hands on activities, exciting games, creative crafts and more.

During the afternoon, the acts will be Cons of Formant (at 12:30), Flint Eastwood (at 1:45), Stiff Necked Fools (3:00) and Don’t Stop Please (4:30).

The Miller Lite/Arkansas Federal Credit Union Stage evening acts will feature Kelly Rowland (at 8:30pm) and Lupe Fiasco (at 10pm).

Earlier in the day, the stage will feature Tori Snead (at 12pm), Thread (at 12:45pm), Stella Luss (at 2pm), War Chief (at 3:15pm), Revolutioners (at 4:30pm), Kingsdown (at 5:45pm) and Flow Tribe (at 7pm).

banner-long-dayRiverfest kicks off tonight with the annual three day festival of music and activities.

On the Bud Light Stage at the Clinton Presidential Center, the acts will be Satellite (at 7pm), Aranda (at 8:15pm) and headliner Daughtry (at 9:45pm).

The Miller Lite/Arkansas Federal Credit Union Stage will feature Jana Kramer (at 6:30pm), Rodney Atkins (at 8pm) and Darius Rucker (at 9:30pm).

The Stickyz Music Stage at the Clinton Presidential Center will feature Butterfly & Irie Soul (at 6:30pm), Hosty Duo (at 8pm) and Lil Ed & The Blues Imperials (at 9:30pm).

Museum of Discovery, Clinton Library lower admissions during Riverfest

rvrfstlogoIn support of and in cooperation with the 36th annual Riverfest, the Museum of Discovery and Clinton Presidential Center are offering visitors special deals on Memorial Day Weekend.

Both major River Market attractions will offer $5 admission all weekend – Friday-Monday, May 24-27 for the Clinton Center and Saturday-Monday, May 25-27, for the museum, which will be closed Friday, May 24.

Also, for Clinton Center, Clinton Museum Store and Museum of Discovery patrons not attending Riverfest, there will be free parking and a free round-trip shuttle from the designed lot located between 4th and 5th streets and Collins Street to each of the attractions.

“Riverfest will bring around 250,000 people to our backyard over Memorial Day Weekend,” said Kelley Bass, CEO of the Museum of Discovery. “A large part of the festival will take place on the grounds of the Clinton Center and Heifer International, so it only makes sense for us to join our neighbors and welcome Riverfest patrons to the museum.”

Besides $5 admission – which equals half-price for adults and $3 off for children – Bass said the museum is offering special programs at the museum throughout the holiday weekend to give people even more reason to visit. Museum educators also will be on-site at Riverfest doing hands-on “tinkering” activities with festival-goers at the Deltic Timber Kidzone Area from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, May 25, and from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday, May 26.

In addition to engaging with the 85 hands-on, interactive exhibits, museum visitors on Memorial Day Weekend will be treated to a full schedule of special programs, with “The Electric Show,” “Awesome Science” and “Meet the Museum Animals” being presented in rotation, on the hour, from noon until 4 p.m. Saturday, May 25; 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 26; and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, May 27.

Also, Tommy’s Terrific Magic Show, which will be presented Sunday at Riverfest, will be featured at 1 p.m. Saturday at the museum.

Arkansas Literary Festival This Weekend!

litfestlogoThe Arkansas Literary Festival, the premier gathering of readers and writers in Arkansas, has expanded to include over 90 authors in many locations on both sides of the river from April 18-21, 2013.

The Central Arkansas Library System’s Main Library campus, other venues in the River Markets and Argenta Arts districts are the sites for a stimulating mix of sessions, panels, special events, performances, workshops, presentations, opportunities to meet the authors, book sales, and book signings. Most events are free and open to the public.

This year’s Festival authors have won an impressive number and variety of distinguished awards, such as the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, Pulitzer Prize for Journalism, James Beard Foundation Award, PEN/Hemingway Award, Newbery Honor, National Book Critics Circle Award, a Coretta Scott King Honor, PEN/O.Henry Prize; Pushcart Prize; Barnes and Noble Discover Prize for Fiction, Roger Ebert’s Film Festival Thumbs Up Award, Pure Belpré Award, International Griffin Prize for Poetry, International Documentary Association Best Documentary Short, Gold Medal from the Society of Illustrators, and several National Book Award Finalists. Many of the presenters’ works have been translated into multiple languages and made into films.

Special events for adults during the Festival include a cocktail reception with the authors, food, wine, and spirits workshops, films, a play, and Spoken Word LIVE!, a city-wide poetry competition. Panels and workshops will feature topics such as fiction, memoir, screenwriting, super hero psychology & law, Warrior Writers Project, erotica, and more.

Children’s special events include a storytime on the lawn of the Governor’s Mansion, a book fiesta, the artmobile, plays, outdoor activities, and Super Hero Activity Afternoon. Festival sessions for children will take place at both the new Children’s Library, 4800 10th Street, and the Youth Services Department at the Main Library, 100 Rock Street.

At Level 4, the Main Library’s teen center, teens can meet authors and illustrators, participate in ComiCALS, activities and panels such as a cosplay contest, video game tournament, a writing workshop, and zombie survival activities.

Through the Writers In The Schools (WITS) initiative, the Festival will provide presentations by several authors for Pulaski county elementary, middle, and senior high schools and area colleges.

The Arkansas Literary Festival is a project of the Central Arkansas Library System. The Festival’s mission is to encourage the development of a more literate populace. A group of dedicated volunteers assists Festival Coordinator Brad Mooy with planning the Festival. Jay Jennings is the 2013 Festival Chair. Architect Kevin McClurkan in conversation tonight

Kevin_McClurkanTonight at 6pm at the Arkansas Arts Center, award-winning architect and Arkansas native Kevin McClurkan, AIA, will make a presentation entitled THREADS: Ennead Architects’ Recent Works.  This is part of the monthly Architecture and Design Network lecture series.

A founding partner and management principal of  Ennead  Architects, New York-based architect Kevin McClurkan, has Arkansas roots and  continuing connections. An alumnus  of Pine Bluff High School, McClurkan earned his Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, where, in 1983, he received the Edward Durell Stone Award for Excellence in Design.

McClurkan has  continued to earn awards – a prestigious national American Institute of Architects Honor Awards among them. His  commitment  to design excellence, supported by  technical innovation,  is the hallmark of his work.  Little Rock’s William J.  Clinton Presidential Center; the Newseum/Freedom Forum Foundation World Headquarters, Washington D.C.; New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts  and  the Pennsylvania State University Dickinson School of Law are among the firm’s recent award-winning projects.

Ennead is the name of the firm formerly known as Polshek Partnership Architects. The firm’s  2010 renaming emphasizes  its identity as a group of architects rather than that of a single design leader.  The new name,  which means a group of nine,  reflects the democratic and collaborative culture of the partnership.

Currently working with Little Rock’s  Polk Stanley Wilcox on the redesign of the city’s  Robinson Auditorium, McClurkan  is a member of the  the University of Arkansas Fay Jones School of Architecture’s Professional Advisory Board.  Of interest to the whole community,  his April talk is  free and open to the public.

ASO River Rhapsodies concludes 2012-2013 with APPALACHIAN SPRING

20121020-054530.jpgThe Arkansas Symphony Orchestra River Rhapsodies concert series concludes the 2012-2013 season tonight.  With spring weather upon us, it is appropriate that tonight’s program is entitled Appalachian Spring.

The evening will include Crumb’s Voice of the Whale, Debussy’s Sonate en trio for Flute, Viola and Harp; ASO composer of the year Higdon’s Amazing Grace and Copland’s Appalachian Spring.  

Performing these selections will be Carl Anthony, piano; Carolyn Brown, flute; Daniel Cline, cello; Alisa Coffey, harp; Leanne Day-Simpson, violin; David Gerstein, cello; Eric Hayward, violin; Andrew Irvin, violin; Kelly Johnson, clarinet; Kiril Laskarov, violin; Susan Bell León, bassoon; Ryan Mooney, viola; Katherine Reynolds, viola and Barron Weir, contrabass.

The concert takes place at 7pm at the Clinton Presidential Center. A limited number of tickets are available at the door. But the concerts usually sell out.
