Art as Activism discussion tonight

30americansIn conjunction with the Arkansas Arts Center’s 30 Americans exhibit, tonight at 6:30, the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center will host a panel on the topic of Art as Activism.

As part of the “501 to 501 Partnership Program”, Dr. Ila Sheren, author of “Art as Activism” and professor at Washington University in St. Louis will host a discussion with Thomas Allen Harris, filmmaker of “Through A Lens Darkly: Black Photographers and the Emergence of a People,” Dr. Deborah Willis, Tisch School of the Arts Photography and Imaging Department Chair, Charley Palmer, mixed media artist, and Delita Martin, artist, Black Box Press studios.

This event will be held at the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center, 501 W. 9th Street (9th and Broadway).

The Mosaic Templars Cultural Center is an agency of the Department of Arkansas Heritage.

The event is free and open to the public.

Red, White & Music – Wind Symphony Flag Day Concert

The Little Rock Wind Symphony’s annual Flag Day concert will take place this evening in MacArthur Park at 7pm.  Sponsored, in part by the MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History, the concert is the LRWS’s annual salute to the red, white, and blue.  Picnics are encouraged. There will also be free ice cream and free American flags to wave throughout the concert.

The musicians of the Little Rock Wind Symphony will perform the following selections:

Celebrate Arkansas’ Statehood today at Historic Arkansas Museum and Old State House Museum

The Old State House Museum and Historic Arkansas Museum will celebrate Arkansas’ Statehood today. A joint living history event, “The Quest for Statehood: From The Delta To The Hills,” will mark 179 years of statehood at both locations.

Costumed interpreters will transform The Old State House and Historic Arkansas Museum into the daily life and work of people representing all sections of 1836 Arkansas with games, talks and activities from 10 to 4 on June 13th.

Pick up a packet of clues about which historical figure you are, where you’re traveling from and why you are in Little Rock on this special day; use these clues to complete a task specific to your character and win a prize! You can participate as an individual, a couple or as a family! All activities are free and open to the public.

The museums are both agencies of the Department of Arkansas Heritage.

2nd Friday Art Night ‘neath the June Moon

2FAN logo Font sm2Tonight at Historic Arkansas Museum during 2nd Friday Art Night, there will be a reception celebrating Arkansas artists Heather Condren & Miranda Young.  It will feature live music by Handmade Moments.  Historic Arkansas Museum’s Year of Arkansas Beer* continues with Core Brewing Company of Springdale, AR.

Heather Condren uses repurposed books to create low relief portraiture illustrating that “books don’t have to tell a story through writing, they can also tell a story through form.” Condren (Conway) earned her BFA with an emphasis in Graphic Design at the University of Central Arkansas.

Miranda Young combines her experience working with diverse media in this exhibition of linocuts and quirky ceramic sculptures mounted like taxidermy. Animal imagery in Young’s work explores the spiritual and emotional meanings that humans associate with animals. Young (Little Rock) is a Printmaking Instructor and Scenic Designer at the Arkansas Arts Center. She earned her BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute.

The exhibition continues in the Second Floor Gallery through August 9, 2015.

 

At the Old State House Museum, live music will be the artform that is celebrated.  Join musicians Bonnie Montgomery and Geoff Robson will play on the lawn of the Old State House Museum on Friday, June 12, to kick off a weekend celebrating 179 Years of Arkansas Statehood. Bring your picnic blankets and lawn chairs to enjoy the music and weather. This event is free.

 

 

 

Tony Awards Week – Will Trice

Though he has been referenced in every Tony Awards Week story this week, today’s entry is devoted to three time Tony winning producer Will Trice.

It is fitting he is a young, Tony winning Broadway producer.  When his mother, Little Rock actress and teacher Judy Trice, was pregnant with him, she was directing the Hall High production of The Pajama Game.  The original Broadway production of that title was produced by another young, Tony winner – Hal Prince.

Will Trice literally grew up on stage and backstage. In addition to his mother, his late father Bill Trice and his sister Kathryn Pryor have graced every conceivable stage in Central Arkansas.  Will, himself, has been an actor and entertainer.  Most recently, he and Kathryn performed their cabaret act for patrons at the Arkansas Arts Center’s Tabriz earlier this year.

Trice’s Tony Awards came for the 2014 Best Play All the Way, 2013 Best Play Revival Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and the 2012 Best Musical Revival Porgy and Bess.  He also received a nomination for 2012 Best Play Revival for The Best Man.  At the 2014 Tonys, of the 26 awards presented, seven went to shows produced by Trice and his producing partner Jeffrey Richards.

This year Trice is nominated for producing Best Play nominee: Wolf Hall Parts One and Two and Best Play Revival nominee: You Can’t Take It with You.  Between those two productions and a revival of The Heidi Chronicles, Trice-produced projects earned fourteen Tony nominations this season.

Not ones to rest on their laurels, Richards and Trice have already announced revivals of Fiddler on the Roof and Sylvia for the 2015-2016 season.

It was fitting that Trice, a 1997 graduate of Central High, was a producer of the Tony-winning 50th anniversary revival of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? in 2012/2013.  Ben Piazza, a 1951 graduate of then-Little Rock High School, was involved in the development of the play in 1962 and performed in the original Broadway production over 500 performances.

The Science of Space tonight at the Museum of Discovery

Tonight offers a great lineup for May’s Science After Dark! The Central Arkansas Astronomical Society will be there with telescopes and more, a planetarium will be set up downstairs, Kevin Delaney will present ‪#‎thespacestrugglesarereal‬ and more!

Science After Dark is only for those kids who are aged 21 years and up.  Admission is $5, but is free for Museum members.

 

TV ALERT – Museum of Discovery’s Kevin Delaney returns to Tonight Show tonight!

Delaney MOD NBCAs proof that good things come in threes, Kevin Delaney, director of visitor experience at the Museum of Discovery, will make his THIRD appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” at 10:35 p.m. Friday, May 22, on NBC.  Delaney serves as the show’s “science expert” and performs multiple science demonstrations with Fallon serving as his lab assistant.

“I am honored to return to ‘The Tonight Show’ and represent the Museum of Discovery and Arkansas,” said Delaney. “It’s exciting to have this opportunity to showcase how amazing science is, all while serving the museum’s mission of igniting a passion for science, technology and math.”

Delaney was chosen after “Tonight Show” producers reached out to more than 50 museums across the country in search of the right candidate. Following a test show in February, Delaney made his successful “Tonight Show” debut on May 5, 2014 and returned again on November 7.
