Death and the Maiden highlights ASO River Rhapsodies Chamber Music Series 2014-2015 start

ASO_revThe Arkansas Symphony Orchestra (ASO), Philip Mann, Music Director and Conductor, presents the opening concert of the 2014-2015 Landers FIAT River Rhapsodies Chamber Music Series: Quartet for the End of Time. ASO musicians present the music of Haydn and Messiaen in the beautiful Grand Hall of the Clinton Presidential Center, 1200 President Clinton Ave., Little Rock, AR, on October 21st at 7 PM. ABOUT THE ARKANSAS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA:

The Arkansas Symphony’s first Masterworks Concert of 2014-15 is this weekend with Rachmaninoff, Corigliano, Brahams and pianist Andrew Staupe

aso staupeASO_2-colorThe Arkansas Symphony Orchestra launches into 2014-2015 with its first Masterworks Concert of the season. Tonight at a new time (7:30pm) and a new, temporary location (Maumelle Performing Arts Center), the evening consists of Corigiliano’s Promenade Overture, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 and Brahms Symphony No. 2.   Guest artist Andrew Staupe will be featured on the Rachmaninoff piece.

Andrew Staupe is emerging as one of the distinctive voices of a new generation of pianists. In 2012 Andrew made his Carnegie Hall debut to critical acclaim, for which New York Concert Review raved “Staupe gave a brilliant performance, handling the virtuosic demands with apparent ease… I was stunned- this was one of the most incredible performances… A once in a lifetime performance!”

The Arkansas Symphony Orchestra is under the direction of Music Director Philip Mann.  Tonight’s concert will be repeated tomorrow afternoon at 3pm, also at the Maumelle location.

Evan Lindquist was selected by Governor Mike Beebe as the first Artist Laureate of Arkansas 2013 – 2017.  He creates original prints in his private studio in Jonesboro, Arkansas.  Most of his prints are engravings developed by his own original ideas and designs.   Lindquist has had more than 60 solo exhibitions and has received more than 80 awards in about 300 competitive exhibitions.  At the reception, Mr. Lindquist will speak about his works, technique and career.

Little Rock Look Back: Miss America 1964 comes to Little Rock

Tonight a new Miss America will be crowned.  This ceremony marks the 50th anniversary since Miss America 1964, Arkansan Donna Axum, ended her reign.

A native of El Dorado and a student at the University of Arkansas, during her reign as Miss America Miss Axum (or simply Donna as the newspaper headlines referred to her) made four public visits to Little Rock.  As the first Miss Arkansas to become Miss America, the state’s Capitol City was very interested in giving her a warm welcome.

After being crowned on September 7, 1963, her first visit to Arkansas was November 1 through 3.  In addition to stops in Hot Springs and El Dorado, she appeared in Little Rock to attend events including an Arkansas Razorback football game at War Memorial Stadium.  Her entourage included the top four runners up from the Miss America pageant.

In February 1964, she made a brief appearance in Little Rock which included a press conference.

Donna Axum spent nearly two weeks in Arkansas in May 1964 attending several pageants as well as spending time with family.  During that visit she appeared in Little Rock twice.  The second time she headlined a concert with the Arkansas Symphony (not related to the current Arkansas Symphony Orchestra) and the Arkansas Choral Society. It took place at Robinson Auditorium.

New Works and Old Favorites are part of the Ballet Arkansas 2014-2015 season

BalletArkWhile most people know Ballet Arkansas for its long tradition of The Nutcracker, the organization is so much more and this season’s line up truly demonstrates that.” Artistic Director Michael Bearden, a former Principal Dancer with Ballet West in Salt Lake City, is delighted to announce that, for the first time, an Arkansas dance company has been authorized by the George Balanchine Trust to perform a piece from his extensive, world renown collection of works. “By authorizing Ballet Arkansas to perform one of its works, the George Balanchine Trust has put a stamp of approval on the growth our company has made. This is a huge honor and accomplishment!”

Ballet Arkansas will present three productions this season, starting off with their first annual Visions  Choreographic Competition to be held in the CALS Ron Robinson Theater in the River Market on August 23rd at 7:00 pm. Thirty-six emerging choreographers from around the country competed for five spots in this competition. The winner will receive a commission to create a complete new work on Ballet Arkansas’s company dancers for their 2015 spring show. The five choreographers  selected for the competition are: Sayoko Knode,  former principal dancer with Idaho Dance Theatre; Jerry Opdenaker, former principal dancer for ballet companies such as Milwaukee Ballet, Pennsylvania Ballet, Kansas City Ballet and Ballet Florida; Brandon Ragland, dancer with the Louisville Ballet; Christopher Stuart dancer with Nashville Ballet; and Hilary Fullmer Wolfley who graduated in 2013 from Brigham Young University with a bachelor’s degree in Ballet. The five pieces will be judged by Adam Sklute, Artistic Director of Ballet West, Rhythm McCarthy with UALR’s Theatre and Dance Program, former Ballet Arkansas Principal Dancer Michael Tidwell with the Tidwell Project and the audience will be the fourth judge.

“I am very pleased with the talent level of our five guest choreographers” said Artistic Director, Michael Bearden “Their abilities in collaboration with our beautiful dancers will make for an evening you won’t want to miss.”

In December, Ballet Arkansas joins forces with the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra to present the annual holiday ballet, Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker at the Maumelle Performing Arts Center.  With music provided by the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, a cast of 200+ youth and adult dancers from the central Arkansas area, professional guest artists, Ballet Arkansas company members and Youth Division, The Nutcracker will continue its tradition as a holiday must-see. The Nutcracker performance week includes student matinees for statewide school groups on December 11 & 12, along with the four public performances on December 12, 13 and 14th.  The Nutcracker Tea at the Capital Hotel provides a wonderful complement to the performances.

In April, Ballet Arkansas will present its mixed rep show  titled Who Cares? after the production’s finale piece. Dancers will be performing the concert version of Balanchine’s Who Cares? set to music by George Gershwin on the stage of the Arkansas Repertory Theatre in downtown Little Rock April 17-19, 2015, with student matinees scheduled for April 16 and 17 for statewide school  groups.  The concert will also feature the expanded winning choreography from the Visions competition, an excerpt from Val Caniparoli’s Lady of the Camellias, Raymonda, and a new piece by former Hubbard Street dancer Greg Sample, who will be expanding one of his existing works.

Ballet Arkansas’ performances in the 2014-2015 Season will also include an appearance at the ACANSA Arts Festival on September 28th at Wildwood Performing Arts Center, a joint collaboration with the Arkansas Symphony Youth Orchestra and Ballet Arkansas’s Youth Division at the Albert Pike Scottish Rite Temple November 14 & 15, a Master Class Series featuring Ballet Arkansas’ guest artists offering classes which can be attended by the general public, a gala in the spring of 2015, a  state-wide touring program and a Student Matinee program, including student matinees at tour sites  around the state.

Philip Mann extends contract with Arkansas Symphony Orchestra

philipmannThe Arkansas Symphony Orchestra announces a three-year extension of Philip Mann’s tenure as Music Director. Mann first took to the podium as ASO Music Director at Robinson Center Music Hall on October 2, 2010.

ASO Board Chair Dr. Richard Wheeler said, “It gives me great pleasure to announce that Philip Mann, Music Director and Conductor of the ASO, has signed a three-year extension of his contract. Because of his artistic leadership, the orchestra has never sounded better and the range of music that this talented group performs is impressive. The Board enthusiastically sought this extension because of Philip’s outstanding artistic leadership and contributions to the musical growth of the organization. Now we can rest assured that his leadership will continue into the future.”

Regarded by the BBC as a “talent to watch out for, who conveys a mature command of his forces,” Mann will continue his Music Director duties by conducting up to 15 weeks of concerts including the Stella Boyle Smith Masterworks and ACXIOM Pops Live! performances, Children’s Concerts, and run-out performances throughout the state.

“Arkansas has become our beloved home, and making music with the fantastic musicians of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra has been a tremendous joy.  We share a common passion in music, and I look forward to continuing this warm and inspiring relationship.  I am proud of what we have accomplished together with the support of our board and administration both artistically and in the community, and am eager to build upon our shared success,” says Philip Mann, Music Director of the ASO.

The series of Intimate Neighborhood Concerts (I.N.C.), increased partnerships with other arts organizations in Central Arkansas, and an improved patron experience through a reconfigured staging of the orchestra, are all thanks to Mann’s vision. According to Christina Littlejohn, ASO Executive Director, “Mann’s work over the last five years towards ASO’s mission to connect, enrich, inspire, and advance Arkansas through the power of music along with his enthusiasm both on and off of the podium is significant. I look forward to his continued momentum during the next three years.”

During the 2009-2010 season, the orchestra’s music director search process used musician and audience surveys collected after each candidate’s performance. Mann was unanimously selected by an eleven member search committee including ASO musicians, board members, and executive director. Mr. Mann’s appointment was also unanimously approved by the orchestra’s Board of Directors.

Hailed by the BBC as a “talent to watch out for, who conveys a mature command of his forces,” American conductor Philip Mann is quickly gaining a worldwide reputation as an “expressively graceful yet passionate” artist with a range spanning opera, symphonic repertoire, new music, and experimental collaborations.  Beginning his third season as Music Director of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, both previous years shattered attendance records and were accompanied by unprecedented artistic growth, new energy, and financial health.  Formerly as the San Diego Symphony’s Associate Conductor, he conducted hundreds of performances of Jacobs Subscription Masterworks, Symphony Exposed, family, young people’s concerts, Kinder Konzert, pops, and other special programs and projects.  As an American Conducting Fellow, the San Diego Union Tribune raved, “Mann was masterful… a skilled musical architect, designing and executing a beautifully paced interpretation, which seemed to spring from somewhere deep within the music rather than superimposed upon it.”

As winner of the Vienna Philharmonic’s Karajan Fellowship at the Salzburg Festival, Mann has relationships with orchestras and operas worldwide: including the Cleveland Orchestra, l’Orchestre symphonique de Québec, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Georgian State Opera, and the National Symphony of Cyprus. His recent Beethoven 9 was described as “Titanic” and his Canadian debut with the OSQ was dubbed by Le Soleil as a “Tour de Force,” and led to an immediate reengagement in 2013.  Other upcoming engagements include the Grand Rapids Symphony, New Mexico Philharmonic,Little Orchestra Society of NY, and the Georgian State Opera. Previously, the music director of the Oxford City Opera and Oxford Pro Musica Chamber Orchestra, he has also held conducting positions with the Music in the Mountains Festival and Indianapolis Symphony. Mann has worked with leading artists such as Joshua Bell, Sharon Isbin, Dmitri Alexeev, Midori, Marvin Hamlisch and given premiers of major composers including John Corigliano, Jennifer Higdon, Michael Torke, Lucas Richman, and many others.   He maintains a lively schedule as a guest conductor having conducted at New York’s Avery Fischer Hall and London’s Barbican Center.

Elected a Rhodes Scholar, Mann studied and taught at Oxford, and has served as assistant conductor to Franz Welser-Möst, Simon Rattle, Leonard Slatkin, Jaime Laredo, Mario Venzago, Bramwell Tovey, Pinchas Zukerman, and many others. At Oxford, he won the annual competition to become principal conductor of the Oxford University Philharmonia.  Under his leadership, the Philharmonia’s performances and tours received international press and acclaim.   Mann studied with Alan Hazeldine of London’s Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Colin Metters at the Royal Academy of Music, and Marios Papadopolous of the Oxford Philomusica.  He worked with Leonard Slatkin and the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center’s National Conducting Institute and Michael Tilson Thomas at the New World Symphony.  Mentorship with Esa-Pekka Salonen and Jorma Panula followed at the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s Conducting Masterclasses, and Robert Spano with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s international Mozart Requiem masterclass for the League of American Orchestras annual conference.   He has also worked under Imre Pallo, David Effron, John Poole, and Thomas Baldner at Indiana University where he was appointed visiting lecturer in orchestral conducting, and worked as assistant conductor at the IU Opera Theater.  Additional studies came under the Bolshoi Theater’s music director, Alexander Vedernikov at the Moscow State Conservatory, Gustav Meir, Kenneth Keisler, and with Pulitzer Prize winning composer Robert Ward.  He is the recipient of numerous awards including commendations from several cities, and the state of California.
