Mozart, a Moose and a World Premiere

The Arkansas Symphony Orchestra River Rhapsodies series continues tonight with Mozart Meets PDQ Bach.

This program includes a world premiere, a trio, a quartet, a quintet, brass, strings and woodwinds.

The evening opens with Mozart’s Quintet in Eb-Major for Horn and Strings, K.407.  That will be followed by a world premiere of Steinmetz’s Trio for Oboes and English Horns.

Schubert’s Quartettsatz in C-minor, D. 703 is next on the program.  The evening concludes with P.D.Q. Bach’s Quartet “Moose.”

The performance is in the Great Hall of the Clinton Presidential Center, starting at 7pm.  For tickets or information, contact the ASO at 666-1761 or the website.

Like many people, the Little Rock Culture Vulture has an iPhone and takes many iPhotos. Yesterday, today and tomorrow, the entries highlight some of his favorite personal iPhotos taken in Little Rock during 2011. The are divided into the Good, the Odd and the Arty.

Two Jewish Guys Chanukah Special on KUAR

Chanukah begins at sundown tonight.  To get everyone in the spirit of it, KUAR – UALR Public Radio – is presenting the 11th annual Jewish Guys Chanukah Special tonight at 7pm on KUAR – FM 89.1.  Little Rock attorney Phil Kaplan and adman Leslie Singer recorded the broadcast before a live audience earlier in the month.

The Jewish Guys Chanukah Special celebrates cultural Judaism and features skits, music and general shtick. Musical guests included the Meshugga Klezmer Band and the Bauman Brothers.

“This year’s special guest is Susan McDougal who special prosecutor Ken Starr sent to prison for no cooperating with his investigation of President Clinton,” Leslie Singer says. “I’m going to ask her if she celebrated Chanukah with the Jewish inmates she has said took her in.”

Kaplan and Singer started identifying themselves as the Two Jewish Guys during KUAR’s semi-annual on-air fund drives several years ago. In 2001, the Two Jewish Guys and UALR Public Radio began producing an annual recorded Chanukah Special. After first featuring a live audience at the Central Arkansas Library System main campus, it outgrew that space and moved in 2007 to the Clinton Presidential Center.

“Interesting enough, at least two-thirds of our audience are not Jewish. That really inspires me that they are interested in the religious and cultural part of Judaism,” Singer noted to KUAR. “They enjoy a peek into another culture. And they like it.”

The program will also be broadcast on Christmas Day at 1pm. That is also the 5th of 8 days of Chanukah.

Finland at Forty-Two

Explore the world, but leave your passport at home!  Forty-Two, the restaurant at the William J. Clinton Presidential Center, continues Around the World Thursdays this month with a visit to the land of the midnight sun, a thousand lakes and mires.

Three courses for only $27.95 provide the opportunity to sample unique flavors in a beautiful setting.   Seating is limited, and reservations are required.  Due to extreme popularity of the events, advanced reservations are strongly recommended. Chef Stephen Burrow was recently crowned the Arkansas Hospitality Association Iron Chef 2011.

This is a great way to celebrate the 7th anniversary of the opening of the Clinton Presidential Center, which opened in November 2004.

Arkansas Symphony Orchestra River Rhapsodies

The Arkansas Symphony Orchestra River Rhapsodies chamber series continues tonight.  Since it takes place at the Clinton Library, which was designed to evoke the Bridge to the 21st Century and is next to the new Clinton Presidential Park Bridge, it is fitting that this entry is entitled Bridging New and Old.

The program not only bridges new and old pieces of music, but it spans a variety of instruments.

Arts & Humanities Month: Big Boo!-seum Bash

For the 16th year, a number of Little Rock museums have joined together to present the Big Boo!-seum Bash.  The 2011 edition takes place tonight. This annual, free event is hosted by members of the Greater Little Rock Museum Consortium and sponsored by the Little Rock Convention and Visitors Bureau. The hours are from 6pm to 8:30pm.

Big Boo!-seum Bash is one giant story-telling, trick-or-treating, fun and games evening that is safe and accessible for children and their families.

This year’s locations are the Historic Arkansas Museum, Heifer Village, Central High School National Historic Site, Old State House Museum, EMOBA, Clinton Presidential Center, MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History and Mosaic Templars Cultural Center.

Visitors can drive to each location, where free parking is available. Game cards will also be issued at each site. Visit five of the eight participating locations to qualify for a prize drawing collected from the participating museums or visit seven of the eight participating locations to qualify for the grand prize drawing.

Visitors are encouraged to support the Arkansas Foodbank by brining non-perishable food items to enter for a chance to win prizes.
