The Central Arkansas Library System’s Library Square plays host to TWO different 2nd Friday Art Night locations.

In the Bobby Roberts Library of Arkansas History and Art – opening tonight in the Loft Gallery is Melissa Cowper-Smith: Natural Treatment, 2018–2019

Musical Guest: Southern Frayed (country-pop trio)

The Galleries at Library Square – Concordia Hall Gallery presents “Fifty Years of McFarlin Oil: Paintings and Sculpture by an Arkansas Traveler”  He has been making art under the moniker of McFarlin Oil for more than fifty years.

Two other continuing exhibitions include “EMBRAID—Three Northwest Arkansas Strands” in the Underground Gallery, “Part to Whole: The Making of Art, the Artist, and the Artists’ Artist Group” in the West Gallery,

Visit The Bookstore six days a week. Three floors of books, gifts, locally made art & jewelry, plus an art gallery. By far the best place to buy used books in central Arkansas. Monday-Saturday 9am-5pm. Gallery open during regular bookstore hours.

June 2nd Friday Art Night at Historic Arkansas Museum

Join Historic Arkansas Museum for June’s 2FAN! Jacob Flores Music will be the evening’s musical guest. Flyway Brewing will be the featured brewery.

In addition, there will be a couple of new objects to view in our galleries. While the Arkansas Arts Center is closed for renovations, institutions around Little Rock will host artwork from their collections. HAM is excited to display a delightful wooden mechanical toy created around 1960 by Arkansas artist Marvin Warren (1895-1994). Woman with Spinning Wheel and Man with Banjo is a humorous depiction of life in rural Arkansas, made in the Southern folk art tradition.
Also new in HAM’s exhibit Life in the Western Country is a portrait of prominent Arkansan Peter Hanger (1807-1895) painted by nationally-recognized portrait and landscape painter John Mix Stanley (1814-1872), who became well-known for his genre scenes of Native Americans. Stanley stayed in Van Buren (Crawford County) for a short time, where he painted a portrait of his host, Peter Hanger. The portrait is on loan to the museum from Kathy and Adam Ratcliffe, Peter Hanger’s descendants.

The reception is sponsored by the Historic Arkansas Museum Foundation, with special thanks to 107 Liquor. Beverages and appetizers will be served in the Stella Boyle Smith Atrium. The exhibits and reception are free and open to the public.

ABOUT TOWNSEND
Townsend has been in the music game for a long time now, however, ran across recent heartache and tragedy when her drummer and buddy passed. The artist took a break from the scene but soon woke up to realize words are healing, and she was ready to find her way back “home.” Pouring her heart and emotions on paper, Townsend got back in the studio, determined to serve her drummer well and complete the CD they always planned on making. Two years later, touching on heartache and renewal, the project has it all. The songs are unimaginably relatable and honest. Whether you like hard rock or some country-twang, there’s a song for you on “Show Me Home.”

Capitol View Studio LLC is located at 120 S. Cross in the West End of downtown Little Rock, AR and is a full production recording studio. Owner, Bryan Frazier, is a working visual artist with a background in art education and music production and is an award-winning singer/songwriter and video producer.
Engineer and producer, Mark Colbert, is the primary audio engineer for Capitol View Studio. Mark is an experienced producer, engineer and professional session drummer. Colbert has spent many years working in professional studios in Los Angeles and has performed and recorded with Grammy award-winning artists such as Kelly Clarkson and Alanis Morissette among many others.

ABOUT THE BAND

A wonderfully eclectic mix of rock and funk, sweet ballads and dynamic protest anthems, the Brian Nahlen Band includes six accomplished musicians who blend original music and reimagined covers into every show. The lineup features frontman and guitarist Brian Nahlen, guitarist Jason Lee Hale, keyboardist Tommy Priakos, sax player Dave Williams II, bassist BrianWolverton and drummer Daniel Olah.

Nahlen is an Arkansas Ambassador. His original music has been called “finely crafted, soulful, deftly fuses funk, jazz, gospel, pop and hip hop.” The Band’s live performances showcase each player’s forte, and no two gigs are the same.

Nahlen has released two albums, “Better Than I Thought It Could Be” (the title track was featured in an Arkansas Parks and Tourism commercial) and “Cicada Moon,” and three singles: “I Might Be Leavin’” (feat. Big Piph), “In the Old Days” and “You Fool.” All of these are available on iTunes, Spotify and other streaming services.

A socially conscious lot, Nahlen and the Band often play benefit shows, which in 2018 alone helped KABF, Puerto Ricans in Arkansas (Nahlen coordinated this), The Van, the Buffalo River and Animal Village. They also performed at the inaugural Central Arkansas Music Awards.

Nahlen started playing guitar 30 years ago and has been a full-time musician for the last 15. He regularly performs alone, in his namesake full band or in a duo with Hale, Nick Devlin, or Luke Johnson. Past stints include Dead Fish, Sunny Daze, Big John Miller Band, Quadraphonic and Pepperland. Once a month, he hosts the Collage Radio Show on KABF.

Tonight at South on Main – John Paul White performs as part of Oxford American music series

John Paul WhiteThe Oxford American is excited to welcome John Paul White back to the South on Main stage tonight, June 5! This is a special addition to the OA’s 2018-19 Concert Series. Doors open at 5:30 PM, with dinner and drinks available for purchase at that time.  The concert starts at 7:30 PM.

Single tickets are $30 (General Admission), $34 (Reserved), and $36 (Premium Reserved).

With The Hurting Kind, John Paul White has crafted a stunning album that draws on the lush, orchestrated music made in Nashville in the early 1960s. Yet these songs retain a modern feel, whether he’s writing about overwhelming love, unraveling relationships, or the fading memory of a loved one.

White grew up in tiny Loretto, Tennessee, and now lives in Florence, Alabama, not far from Muscle Shoals. He has cultivated his career in Nashville for two decades, first as a songwriter for a major publisher, then as half of The Civil Wars—a groundbreaking duo that won four GRAMMY Awards before disbanding in 2012.

Because The Civil Wars were so hard to categorize, White has earned a fan base among indie rock listeners, folk audiences, Americana outlets, and AAA radio. So, what will happen if people hear The Hurting Kind and call it country? “Well, that doesn’t scare me in the least,” he says. “As a matter of fact, it kind of thrills me.”

Judas Priest should still be “Delivering the Goods” on June 1 Riverfront Park concert

As reported earlier today (May 30), the new estimate for the Arkansas River crest in Little Rock is now expected on Wednesday, June 5 at 29 feet.

“At the current levels, coupled with the forecast from NOAA, we feel confident that none of the critical operating components of the stage, the seating area, the pit or the loading areas will be adversely affected by rising water at the time of the Judas Priest Concert on Saturday, June 1,” said Jim Rice, COO, Little Rock Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Based on the current situation and forecast, the concert will proceed as planned.

LRCVB operations will continue to monitor both NOAA reports and the venue daily and remain in close contact with the concert promoter so that if anything changes, ticketholders can be notified as quickly as possible.  Additionally, the media will be updated as well as our websites and social media postings.

The box office will open at 12pm on Saturday for concertgoers who prefer to purchase tickets upon arrival.  Gates will open at 5pm.  Show starts at 7:30pm.
