Hitchcocktoberfest at the CALS Ron Robinson Theater closes out with PSYCHO. Stay out of the shower……

Image result for psycho movie posterTonight is the last chance in 2019 to join the CALS Ron Robinson Theater for HITCHCOCKTOBERFEST! They have been screening FIVE classic Hitchcock films throughout October, and finish the series off tonight (October 29) with Psycho

The screening starts at 7pm.

Phoenix secretary Marion Crane, on the run after stealing $40,000 from her employer in order to run away with her boyfriend, Sam Loomis, is overcome by exhaustion during a heavy rainstorm. Traveling on the back roads to avoid the police, she stops for the night at the ramshackle Bates Motel and meets the polite but highly strung proprietor Norman Bates, a young man with an interest in taxidermy and a difficult relationship with his mother.

The film stars Janet Leigh (whose daughter would star in her own iconic horror movie), Vera Miles, John Gavin, Martin Balsam, and, of course, Anthony Perkins. It was nominated for four Oscars – Supporting Actress (Leigh), Director (Hitchcock), Black and White Cinematography and Black and White Art Direction.  Interestingly, Bernard Herrmann’s iconic score was not nominated.

Hitchcocktoberfest dodges THE BIRDS tonight at the CALS Ron Robinson Theater

The Birds (1963)Join the CALS Ron Robinson Theater for HITCHCOCKTOBERFEST! They will be screening FIVE classic Hitchcock films throughout October, and continue the series off tonight (October 22) with The Birds

The screening starts at 7pm.

The 1963 film is rare for Hitchcock in that the central character is female (though of course, bad things happen to her.) It starred Tippi Hedron along with Rod Taylor, Jessica Tandy, Veronica Cartwright, and Suzanne Pleshette.

Melanie Daniels, a wealthy San Francisco socialite pursues a romance with Mitch Brenner, a young lawyer, which takes her on a journey to a small Northern California town. Things slowly take a turn for the bizarre when birds of all kinds suddenly begin to attack people.

The movie was nominated for one Oscars: Best Visual Effects.

Hitchcocktoberfest suffers from VERTIGO tonight at the CALS Ron Robinson Theater

Vertigo PosterJoin the CALS Ron Robinson Theater for HITCHCOCKTOBERFEST! They will be screening FIVE classic Hitchcock films throughout October, and continue the series off tonight (October 17) with Vertigo

The screening starts at 7pm.

The 1958 film is the third collaboration between Alfred Hitchcock and Jimmy Stewart. It also featured Kim Novak (another in the long line of cool, attractive blondes which Hitchcock cast in his movies), Tom Helmore, Barbara Bel Geddes, Henry Jones, and Ellen Corby.

John “Scottie” Ferguson is a former police detective forced into early retirement because an incident in the line of duty caused him to develop acrophobia and vertigo. His fears are confronted when Scottie is hired by an acquaintance, Gavin Elster, as a private investigator to follow Gavin’s wife Madeleine, who is behaving strangely.

The movie was nominated for two Oscars: Best Sound and Best Art Direction.

Hitchcocktoberfest continues with REAR WINDOW

Rear Window (1954, PG)

Join the CALS Ron Robinson Theater for HITCHCOCKTOBERFEST! They will be screening FIVE classic Hitchcock films throughout October, and continue the series off tonight (October 8) with Rear Window.

The screening starts at 7pm.

The 1954 film is the second collaboration between Alfred Hitchcock and Jimmy Stewart. It also featured Grace Kelly (another in the long line of cool, attractive blondes which Hitchcock cast in his movies), Raymond Burr, Thelma Ritter, and Judith Evelyn.

Professional photographer L.B. “Jeff” Jefferies (Stewart) breaks his leg while getting an action shot at an auto race. Confined to his New York apartment, he spends his time looking out of the rear window observing the neighbors. He begins to suspect that a man (Burr) across the courtyard may have murdered his wife. Jeff enlists the help of his high society fashion-consultant girlfriend Lisa Freemont (Kelly) and his visiting nurse Stella (Ritter) to investigate.

The movie was nominated for four Oscars: Director, Screenplay, Color Cinematography, and Sound. Surprisingly none of the cast were nominated. At the time, Ritter was nominated almost every year in the Best Supporting Actress category, though she never won.

The CALS Hitchcocktoberfest moves NORTH BY NORTHWEST tonight

North by Northwest (1959, NR)

Dodge a plane. Climb on the face of Mount Rushmore. Spot the kid covering his ears before the gunshot.

Join the CALS Ron Robinson Theater for HITCHCOCKTOBERFEST! They will be screening FIVE classic Hitchcock films throughout October, and start the series off tonight (October 1) with North by Northwest.

The film turns 60 this year, but is as taut and engaging as when Hitchcock first made it.  The screening starts at 7pm.

Cary Grant teams with director Alfred Hitchcock for the fourth and final time in the superlative espionage caper, North by Northwest, judged as one of the American Film Institute’s Top 100 American Films and recipient of three Academy Award nominations.

Grant stars as an innocent man mistaken for a spy in one of Hitchcock’s greatest thrillers. While leaving New York’s Plaza Hotel, advertising executive Roger Thornhill (Grant) has the misfortune of standing just as the name “George Kaplan” is paged — starting a lethal case of mistaken identity and a nonstop game of cat and mouse as he is pursued across North America by espionage agents trying to kill him… and by police who suspect him of murder.

Pursued by spy (James Mason) and counterspy (Eva Marie Saint), Thornhill is variously abducted, framed for murder, chased and in another signature set piece, crop-dusted. He also holds on for dear life from the facial features of the Presidents on Mount Rushmore. It all adds up to another box-office smash from the Master of Suspense.

Tonight at Ron Robinson Theater – Hitchcock’s THE 39 STEPS

rrt 39 stepsOne of Alfred Hitchcock’s early films, while he was still in Great Britain, was 1935’s The 39 Steps. With themes that he would return to time and time again, it tells the story of a man in London who tries to help a counterespionage agent. But when the agent is killed and the man stands accused, he must go on the run to both save himself and also stop a spy ring which is trying to steal top secret information.

The film stars Robert Donat and Madeleine Carroll. Others in the cast are Lucie Mannheim, Godfrey Tearle, Peggy Ashcroft, John Laurie, Frank Cellier and Wylie Watson.  It also features a cameo by Hitchcock himself.

The film was written by Ian Hay and Charles Bennett, adapted from the novel by John Buchan.  The 39 Steps was adapted for the stage in the early 2000s and won two Tony Awards.

The mystery starts tonight at 7pm at the CALS Ron Robinson Theater.  Admission is $5 with concessions available for purchase.
