Gardner and historian Todd Longstaffe-Gowan at Clinton School today at noon

todd-portrait-52b41521e74e7Todd Longstaffe-Gowan is an author, historian, gardener, geographer, and landscape architect will be speaking at the Clinton School today at noon.

Since entering into private practice, Longstaffe-Gowan has advised on a number of public and private historic landscapes. He has developed and implemented long-term landscape management plans for the National Trust, English Heritage and consulted on historic landscapes including the Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace, and the Crown Estate. Longstaffe-Gowan will discuss his re-presentation of the pleasure grounds at Kensington Palace to mark the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty The Queen. The Kensington Palace Gardens has been a favorite place of residence for various members of the royal family including Queen Victoria, Prince Charles and Princess Diana, and will soon be the London home of Prince William and Princess Catherine.

Longstaffe-Gowan takes on a range of projects in Britain and abroad, many with a conservation slant. ‘My work reflects my interest in the dramatic and sculptural potential of landscape, and is imbued with whimsical, historical eclecticism’, he says. ‘I like to think that my gardens are intelligent as well as beautiful, as they are informed by my training as an architect, landscape architect, geographer and historian.’

Tales from the South on Wednesday this week

talesfromthesouthThe WEDNESDAY, March 12 edition of  ”Tales from the South” is themed “Conflict Resolution.” We’ve all had to do it.  Tonight will be the chance to hear stories Madison Hedrick, Tyler Thompson, and Joseph Bourbon Cole. Music is by Brad Williams and blues guitarist Mark Simpson

“Tales From the South” is a radio show created and produced by 2013 Governor’s Arts Award recipient Paula Martin Morell, who is also the show’s host. The show is taped live on generally on a Tuesday, but this week on a Wednesday. The night is a cross between a house concert and a reading/show, with incredible food and great company. Tickets must be purchased before the show, as shows are usually standing-room only.

“Tales from the South” is a showcase of writers reading their own true stories. While the show itself is unrehearsed, the literary memoirs have been worked on for weeks leading up to the readings. Stories range from funny to touching, from everyday occurrences to life-altering tragedies.

The program takes place at Starving Artist Café.  Dinner is served from 5pm to 6:30pm, the show starts at 7pm.  Admission is $7.50, not including dinner.

That’s a Fact, Jack! – STRIPES to be shown by LR Film Fest tonight at Ron Robinson Theater

stripes-posterAs a tribute to filmmaker Harold Ramis who died last week, the Little Rock Film Festival will be screening his 1981 comedy opus Stripes.  This film melded Reagan Era Cold War and Animal House (which was also a Ramis project) mentalities.

Tonight at 7pm, actor Judge Reinhold (Beverly Hills Cop, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Seinfeld) will be in town to host a tribute to his friend and comic legend, the late Harold Ramis. Reinhold appeared in Stripes with Ramis; it was, in fact, Reinhold’s film debut.

Following the screening Reinhold will talk about the life and career of Harold Ramis, considered by many to be one of the great comedic minds of his generation. This discussion will be moderated by Renee Shapiro.

Admission is $5, and concessions will be available for $1. Please show up early as seating is on a first-come first serve basis.

Sandwich in History at LR’s Christ Church today

christchurch_scaledOn Friday, March 7 at 12 noon, the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program’s monthly “Sandwiching in History” program will visit Christ Church, Little Rock’s downtown Episcopal church since 1839.

Located at Capital and Scott Streets in downtown, the current sanctuary was built in 1940-41, designed by local architect Edwin Cromwell. That building replaced an 1887 structure which had burned in 1938.  The 1887 edifice itself replaced an 1840-1841 building which had been destroyed by fire in 1873.  A Parish House was constructed in 1928 adjacent to the sanctuary which is still in use today.

The “Sandwiching in History” program is a series of tours that seeks to familiarize people who live and work in central Arkansas with the historic structures and sites around us. The tours take place on Fridays at noon, last less than an hour, and participants are encouraged to bring their lunches so that they can eat while listening to a brief lecture about the property and its history before proceeding on a short tour. A representative from the property is encouraged to attend also and address the group.

The tours are organized by the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program, an agency of the Department of Arkansas Heritage. All tours are free and open to the public.

LES MIZ at Ark Rep is focus of Clinton School program at noon today

replesmizThe Arkansas Repertory Theatre works in partnership with the Clinton School of Public Service to participate in the UACS’s Distinguished Speaker Series, hosting educational panel discussions on various Rep productions. The latest in these takes place today, Thursday, March 6 at 12 noon at Sturgis Hall in Clinton Presidential Park.

Arkansas Repertory Theatre producing artistic director, Bob Hupp, will host a panel discussion on the upcoming production of the Tony Award winning musical Les Miserables, which returns to the Rep’s stage.

Les Miserables, one of the most popular shows in The Rep’s history, is a musical by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg, and returns to the Rep from March 5 through April 6, 2014 under the direction of Robert Hupp. Les Miserables is based on the novel by Victor Hugo and tells the story of Jean Valjean as he evades police after breaking his parole, while protecting a young orphan named Cosette. Panelists will include members of The Rep’s creative team in a conversation about how film productions and stage productions differ while attempting to tell the same story.

Les Miserable opens tomorrow night (with previews last night and tonight). It runs through Sunday, April 6. Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday evening performances are at 7 p.m., Friday, Saturday evening performances are at 8 p.m. Sunday Matinees performances are at 2 p.m.

Legacies & Lunch today – “Big News from Old Stuff” with State Archeologist

legacies The University of Arkansas Museum Collections may contain prehistoric collections, but they are far from ancient history. Dr. Ann Early, State Archeologist, will give a talk at the Butler Center’s Legacies & Lunch program on Wednesday, March 5, at noon in the CALS Ron Robinson Theater.

Dr. Early will discuss a sample of recent and ongoing research projects that use old collections, some nearly a century old, kept safe here in Arkansas. The results include major advances in Arkansas studies and contributions to studies of human history on a national and international scale. Archeological collections may not always be on constant view, but they are living laboratories that are continually used by researchers, educators, descendant peoples, and citizens interested in history. People come back to these collections with new research questions and new methods of analysis. Like libraries and archives, museum collections will continue to offer new discoveries and new insights into Arkansas history far into the future.

The Arkansas State Archeologist is Dr. Ann M. Early, whose office is located in Fayetteville at the Arkansas Archeological Survey. The duties of the State Archeologist involve all aspects of public archeology from site reporting, to liaison with public agencies, to public education.

The State Archeologist works closely with the Arkansas Archeological Society on such projects as the annual Society Dig and Training Program and Arkansas Archeology Month. She oversees the Survey’s Education Program, which produces a variety of educational materials, such as books, exhibits, and informational flyers for teachers, students, and the general public.

The State Archeologist nominates Arkansas sites to the National Register of Historic Places and can provide information on reporting sites in Arkansas. Information on state laws pertaining to archaeological sites in Arkansas can also be obtained from her office.

Legacies & Lunch is free, open to the public, and supported in part by the Arkansas Humanities Council. Programs are held from noon-1 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month. Attendees are invited to bring a sack lunch; drinks and dessert are provided. For more information, contact 918-3033.
